Windham – Windham Board of Education (BOE) met for their regularly-scheduled meeting with all but one board member in attendance, along with Superintendent Gregg Isler and Treasurer Samantha Pochedly
Melissa Roubic gave the Maplewood report and reported that the new electricity instructor has done a great job in setting up the electrical lab. She also reported that The Maplewood board acknowledged Daryl Maguire for his eight years of service on the Maplewood Board.
Superintendent Gregg Isler reported that enrollment over the past 10 years is down. This year they are down 19 students from last year. The state report cards are out and Windham was rated effective as they expected to be. Their performance continues to improve as they continue to strive to do better. Principal Mike Chaffee and Isler were invited to NEO Med and were introduced to a new program that would partner with NEO Med as they highlight health professions. The program is designed to help get students interested in healthcare professions. Isler and Chaffee will investigate the program further before making any commitment. Lastly, Isler showed the board what the new graduation test being planned for the 2013-2014 school year would entail. Using the smart board Isler demonstrated with a few sample problems what the students would have to do to graduate. The new test will be all done electronically.
Principal Mike Chaffee announced that the basketball team finished 14-0 in the Portage Trail Conference. He also reported that last weeks Rival for a Cause Game with Garfield raised nearly $3500 for Devon Regan. The evening was full of activities — from a Jeff Stanley Scholarship Dinner to the game, and Hall of Fame inductions. It was a great evening that was well-planned. Chaffee also reported that the junior high school students collected pennies for patients and raised $1000 for leukemia and that Windham had several students who participated in the Garrettsville Rotary Club’s Family week Art Competition, with several students taking home awards.
Principal Harry Selner of Katherine Thomas Elementary recently held parent/teacher conferences. They had about 67% of the students represented at the conference. He also reported that the students just completed the jump rope heart-a-thon and raised $600.
In special education, Mr. Robert Kujala reported that they continue to work on alternative assessments, and goal writing for the students on individual education programs( IEP’s) as they prepare for the new standards that are being mandated.
In maintenance and transportation, Craig Alderman reported that the new bus was in service and assigned to the driver with the most longevity with the district. Alderman also reported that the floors at KT will be refinished over the Spring Break. He also mentioned that they would be looking to do some roof repair on the high school.
In other board news the BOE hired Mike Cooper as a bus driver for 4 1/2 hours a day for the remainder of the school year. He was hired to replace a driver who resigned. They approved the 2013-2014 school calendar.
The BOE went into executive session and with no other decisions to be made, the meeting was adjourned. The BOE will meet on March 27, 7 pm in the KT Library. The district rotates meetings between KT and the high school.
