“Environmental Alternatives” Presentation

Friends of Portage Lakes State Park will meet at the Kiwanis Civic Center, 725 Portage Lakes Drive, on Sept. 20th at 7:00 p.m..  Dr. James Frost will present a power point program entitled “Environmental Alternatives” based on a management system of “green” methods to use in protecting and preserving our natural environment.  He will discuss ideas presented at the Center for Alternative Technology in Wales and how they would apply to the proposed Environmental Education Space for Portage Lakes State Park.  Anyone interested is welcome to attend.  For more information, contact Lynn Stamp at 330-644-2428.

Public Observing: Moon Night

Stephens Memorial Observatory of Hiram College will host a public observing night from 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM, participating in this year’s International Observe the Moon Night! The Observatory is located on Wakefield Road (Rt. 82) less than a quarter of a mile west of Route 700 in Hiram. No reservations are required and there is no admission fee for observatory public nights. Cloudy skies at the starting time cancel the event and, the observatory will not open. There is no parking at the Observatory. Visitors may park on permissible side streets or in the nearby parking lot of Harrison’s Hideaway Convenience Store, 6821 Wakefield Road, a short distance east of the observatory.

Gospel Fest

The Christian Life Center will host a Gospel Fest on September 23, 2012 at 3:30pm. The church is located at 5931 Rhodes Road Kent. Everyone loves cheap books and you can’t beat the deals you’ll find at the Friends of the Hiram College Library book sale.  Sept. 24 through Sept.28, the lobby of the Hiram College Library will be home to this book-lovers dream.  The Library is hosting this sale with hundreds of books ranging in price from 50¢ for paperbacks to $1 for hardcovers and covering every genre imaginable.  The selection will be unmatched and the proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Hiram College Library and its programs. Admission is free so be sure to drop by between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. and pick up some treasures for your bookcase, plus support the Friends of the Hiram College Library and its goal of promoting  reading and the Hiram College Library.

Getting Ahead Workshop

Getting Ahead is a 10-week workshop series where participants work in groups to examine the impact of poverty on themselves and their communities and to explore the world through the lens of economic class. This class is ideal both for individuals who are working to transition from poverty to self-stability or middle-class individuals that want to better serve their community. Girls Youth Basketball

New & Old Treasures Sale

On Sept. 29 a New and Old Treasurers Sale will be held in the Shalersville Town Hall from 9:00 to 4:00.  Tables for sellers will be available free but a 10% gratuity will be required on sales amount for the day.  Set-up time starts at 8:00am.  A concession stand will be provided for those who want eat and shop..  Come to look, shop or sell and help the Historical Society on our new projects. Stuffed Pork Chop Dinner

The Braceville UMC (off St. Rt. 82 in the center of Braceville), will hold a stuffed pork chop dinner on Sept 29. The dinner begins at 4:00 and will be served until 6:30 unless food runs out. The dinner includes mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts, bread, coffee, tea or punch. The cost is $9 for adults and $3.50 for children. Takeouts are available.

Boy Scout Popcorn

Its popcorn time again!  Boy Scout Troop 65, chartered by The Nelson United Methodist Church, will be having two popcorn Show and Take days to showcase the exciting new flavors like jalapeno-cheddar, white chocolate cranberry and more in addition to the regular line up of flavors.  The first one will be held at Haylett’s BP in Mantua on Sept. 29th from 9-2.  The second one will be on Oct. 6th at the Garrettsville IGA from 9-2.  If you can’t make it out on those days, please contact our Popcorn Kernel, Dawn Gula, at 330-274-8419 for info on how to get your own order of delicious Boy Scout Popcorn.
NGCC Spaghetti Dinner

Please join the Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard for an All- You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner and Chinese Auction on Saturday, September 29th.  Dinner will be served from 4:00-7:00pm at the Nelson Community House.  The menu includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad, homemade rolls, dessert and beverage.  The admission price includes 1 free ticket for the Chinese Auction.  The cost is $7.00 for adults, $4.00 for children 3-12 years old and children under 3 years old eat free.  All proceeds to benefit the Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard to further our mission to “Shut The Door On Hunger” in our community.

Youth Sportsfest

The Trumbull County 4-H Shooting Sports Pioneers Club will host a free NRA Youth Sportsfest on Sept. 29 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Fish & Game Club of Vienna on SR 193 across from the Youngstown Warren Regional Airport.  The purpose of this event is to teach basic gun & archery safety, demystify firearms by providing hands-on experience, and provide an enjoyable learning experience to all youth ages 9 to 18 years old.  Pre-registration before SEPTEMBER 24 is required at (330) 898-4486 or email at larrybeard@aol.com.  Parents must sign a release.  No guns owned by the participants are to be brought to this event!!

Craft Show

The First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Ravenna is hosting their annual craft show on Saturday, September 29, from 9 am to 3 pm at 420 S. Prospect St in Ravenna.    There will be a variety of vendors attending with soaps, jewelry, quilts, Avon, Tupperware, gift boxes, and many other types of crafts, all at reasonable prices.   There will be a bake sale and a lunch counter that will offer delicious food items for lunch and snacking.     A raffle will be held with gifts donated by all the vendors at 2:45 pm.  The tickets will be $1 each or 6 for $5.

During the retreat, find sessions in canoeing on Bass Lake, yoga in a natural setting, geocaching and art with recycled materials. Bring a matt for yoga, too. Huntsburg Pumpkin Festival

The annual Fall Bazaar will be held at Burton Congregational Church from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on October 13.  Craft vendors are welcome to reserve a table.  The cost is $20.  To reserve a table, call Kathy Uncapher at 440-834-1172.  The church is also accepting rummage sale items (no clothing), which may be dropped off at the church from 9 until noon on Mondays through Thursdays or on Sunday mornings.   Donations of crafts of any kind may also be dropped off at the church at these times.  Donations of baked goods may be brought to the church on October 12 or 13.   The Burton Congregational Church is located at 14558 W. 64th Annual Apple Butter Festival

The 64th Annual Apple Butter Festival comes to Century Village Museum Oct. 13 and 14. This year, for the first time, fans of this Geauga County tradition will be able to compete for the titles of festival King and Queen. The 2012 Apple Butter Festival is sponsored in part by Geauga Bow. Hours for the festival are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $4 children 6-12.
