Hiram – At the last meeting, Resident Ann Patella noted that she’s taken on the task of creating a database of the veterans’ names and grave locations in preparation of the Village’s Memorial Day service at Fairview Cemetery. She noted that of the 250 veterans interned there, 22 graves could not be located and 18 were missing markers. She also noted that at 78, she’s no longer able to facilitate the planting of 250+geraniums at each gravesite. Council thanked her for her efforts and assured her that Wendelin Taylor would cross-reference her file with the Village’s records in order to prepare for the service.
Council also suggested that attendees to the observance bring trowels to assist with planting the geraniums during or after the service. Mayor Lou Bertrand reported that the Village’s Memorial Day observance will take place at noon on May 31st at Fairview Cemetery with a reception immediately following at Koritansky Hall at Hiram College.
In his Police Report, Chief Brian Gregory shared that the Department’s Fishing with a Cop will take place on Saturday, August 28th from 9 am until 1 pm at Camp Asbury in Hiram. In other news, Gregory warned residents to be wary of Covid-19 vaccine scams. He directed those interested in receiving the vaccine to contact the County Health Department or their local pharmacy. He noted that at the time of the meeting, Rite-Aid in Garrettsville had vaccines available.
In his Fire Department Report, Assistant Fire Chief Jason Groselle noted that Fireworks in the Village would take place on July 2nd. In addition, the Committee is in the process of determining the timing for a bike rodeo and parade during the July 4th weekend. More details will be forthcoming. In similar news, it was noted that Hiram College graduation for 2021 graduates will take place on Saturday, May 15th. The College will hold another ceremony, on Sunday, May 16th for 2020 graduates as well.
In his report, Village Administrator James McGee noted that the water main project was set to begin along Garfield Road. He also proposed the installation of new signs to be placed at the entrance to the Village. Lastly, Council directed Solicitor Thomas Reitz to move forward and file charges against the homeowner of the derelict property on Plum Ridge Drive.
