Garrettsville – The May 21, 2018 meeting of the James A. Garfield Historical Society was prefaced by a presentation from secretary Pam Montgomery on her recent researches on local holders of U.S. patents. The devices, processes and products she discovered were quite varied and interesting, including items associated with the maple industry and ophthalmological discoveries. Whew! Smart people around here.
Just plain old business included an update on Christmas Walk locations and themes, a sign-up for those to be on-site during SummerFest to welcome the public, presentation of the JAGHS Senior Scholarship on May 30—with a request to the recipient to speak to the group at some point, and ongoing decorating/repair at the Mott Building.
New business included the coming appearance of Roger Pettit on July 16 to talk about Nelson historical highlights, the annual picnic in August, featuring a potluck meal and an invitation to the Evans family to talk about history in Freedom Township, a quick-fix in the lovely little “pocket garden” between the Mott Building and the Bogrand Bonnet Shoppe, the discovery of a leak at the shop which has been dealt with by Gene Semplak, plumber extraordinaire, who also pointed out some issue with the back steps and the bilko doors. The garage sale netted the Society some sixty dollars from sale of surplus items. John Zizka gave a brief exposition on a nearby historical restoration.
Next meeting will be on June 18, members and interested members of the public are invited to hear the program.
