In spite of the negative news coming from the Crestwood District as of late, it’s important to recognize the dedicated students and staff who continue to make strides to make a positive impact on their schools and community.
Recently, ten talented and driven seniors from Crestwood High School (pictured at right) participated in a college signing ceremony at CHS. While family and friends looked on, student athletes made their commitments to a variety of higher educational institutions to pursue sports while earning their college degrees. Mikayla Campbell and Mariah Kess will play volleyball at Cuyahoga Community College, Kassie Fedor will play volleyball at Walsh University, and Frank Fugman will join the track & field team at Thiel College. Sierra Gregel will join the softball team at the University of Akron, while Brendan Hershberger will play baseball at Wright State University’s Lake Campus. Eric Lawless will play football at the University of Mount Union, while Mackenzie Tayerle joins the wrestling team at Adrian College. Ashley Wieclaw was recruited for the bowling team at Ursuline College, while Taylor Yoder will play softball at Walsh University. Congratulations!
At Crestwood Middle School, seventh and eight grade students participated in PenOhio, a writing league of private, parochial and public schools across Ohio. In the recent regional competition, four students qualified to compete and represent Crestwood at the PenOhio State Competition at the College of Wooster later this month. Those students are: 7th grader Gabby Opalanko and 8th graders Elizabeth O’Bryant, Emily Marek, and Allie Owen. They will compete in a writing tournament against nearly 500 talented writers from across the state. Good luck, ladies!
And lastly, 47 Crestwood students spanning from kindergarten through middle school participated in the Destination Imagination (DI) Region 15 tournament. This project-based learning extracurricular allows student-driven teams made up of up to seven students to compete in their choice of STEM (science, technology, engineering, & math) areas, as well as the arts and social entrepreneurship. The #offtaskers from CMS and the Creators from CIS each won fourth place in their age groups in the Scientific challenge, while the Imagination Devils from CIS won third place in the Fine Arts challenge. CIS team 5 peas in a pod won fourth place in the Improv challenge, while Team KAEBCK from CIS won first place in the Structural challenge, earning them a spot in the DI State competition last month.
