Looking for Swim Lessons for Your Children?

Well look no further than Hiram College.  Missed the start of our first session?  Have no fear as every five weeks begins a new opportunity for the community’s youth to participate in the Hiram College Water Dog Swim Lessons.  Get lessons from the colleges finest once a week for a five week period.  Each lesson lasts forty-five minutes with an additional fifteen minutes for your child to gain more confidence in the water. Ready to Launch a Young Reader

Since the fall of 2000, Burton Public Library has been offering a free gift to any child entering kindergarten.  To promote literacy, each child receives  a hardcover beginning reader book,  a sturdy book bag, an application for a library card and a coupon to exchange for a finger puppet that goes along with the story.  This Launch A Young Reader program is made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Joseph Durket family along with contributions from other individual donors.  All Berkshire kindergartners will receive their bags at school on October 3rd.  Children attending other schools and home schoolers are welcome to stop by the Burton Public Library anytime to pick up their gift.  The library is located at 14588 West Park Street, on the square in Burton Village.  Phone is 440-834-4466.

Bomber Marching Band Blacklight Halftime Show

The Windham Bomber Marching Band is very excited to put on their first Blacklight halftime show on September 26th during their home game against Lutheran East.  They have been working hard and would like to invite everyone to come see the show.

Book Sale

Fortress of Fear Zombie Dash

The Fortress of Fear, located in Garrettsville, is hosting a 5K Run and After Party on Sept 27. This is a night run using live actors, special effects and loud music.  Come run in the race or be part of the chase! Stuffed Pork Chop Dinner

Braceville UMC will be having a stuffed pork chop dinner on Sept 27th from 4-6:30pm unless food runs out. Dinner includes mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts, bread, coffee, tea, or punch. The cost is $9.00 for adults and $3.50 for children. Vendors wanted for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1055 Ladies Auxiliary Rummage and Craft Sale.  The VFW Auxiliary will be sponsoring a rummage sale on Sept 27th from 9-4. Revival at Southington Baptist Church

Community Center at Mantua Center

We’re bringing life and activity to the old school at Mantua Center (just north of SR 82 on Center Road) every Tuesday.  Doors to the old cafeteria open at 9:30 and the coffee pot is on.  The watercolor group paints all morning and is welcoming to new participants (bring supplies).  There’s always a jigsaw puzzle to work on and a box of board games is available.  There are usually people sewing and various projects to try.  You’re welcome to bring your own project, or just come to sit and chat.  Bring food to share for potluck lunch at noon.    We usually close for a while in the late afternoon and reopen at five for our Don’t Eat Alone Supper served at 5:30.  If you eat way too many meals by yourself, you’re invited to join us for this meal, which is no longer potluck, but planned and provided.  For more information call Ellie Monroe at 330-274-0711 or e-mailefoster@config.com.

Hiram College Library Book Sale

Be sure to join the Friends of the Hiram College Library Sept 30 – Oct 4 as they host the Fall book sale.  Hundreds of gently read books are available, as are an assortment of CDs, DVDs, and other miscellaneous items.  Hardbacks are $1.00; paperbacks $.50; CDs and DVDs $1.00; LPs, cassettes, and VHS tapes $.50.  Hours are:  Tuesday and Wednesday  8 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursday and Friday  8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday  9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The library is located on Hayden Street in Hiram.  Please visit if you can!

Nelson Township Meeting

On October 1, 2014, the Nelson Township Trustee Meeting will include an agenda item on the public impact of the “festivals” (concerts) at Nelson Ledges Quarry Park. The Nelson Township Trustees will be seeking community input into the effect on safety and quality of life issues as a result of these concerts.

Crop Walk

The Hiram/Mantua Crop Hunger Walk is a community-wide event  sponsored by Church World Service and organized by groups to raise funds to end hunger at home and around the world. Twenty-five percent of the money raised comes back to our local 4C’s Food Cupboard. On October 5th at 1:00p.m., participants will walk from Hiram Christian Church to Mantua Village Park. Pledge forms and more information can be obtained at Hiram Church, Mantua Center Church or Hilltop Church. You can also donate on-line at cwsglobal.org. You can also donate by pledging to support a walker on Sunday morning, Oct. 5th at our joint church service.

The next home cooked supper at Pricetown Methodist Church, 4640 Pritchard-Ohltown Rd, Newton Falls, will feature: Sweet Sausage Cacciatore or Chicken Cacciatore with side, vegetable, super salad, rolls, dessert and beverage. This will be held from 5 to 6:30pm  Oct 8, 2014.  Cost is still only $7 for adults, $5 for kids 10 and younger.

Annual Amish Auction

Bring the entire family out for an evening of fun and food at the Annual Amish  Auction on Friday, Oct 10th at 4:00 pm at the John “Buster” Miller farm located at 17719 Newcomb Rd., Middlefield, Ohio 44062.  Again this year we will be auctioning off a 2-car 24 x 24 garage built to your specifications on your site, horses, quilts, furniture, crafts, flowers and vegetables.  Two Seater Open Buggy Raffle tickets will be sold and there will also be a Chinese raffle.  Burgers and fries, pie and ice cream are some of the delicious food items available to eat. Proceeds will benefit DDC Clinic~Center for Special Needs Children located in Middlefield, a primary care and research facility for special needs children with rare genetic disorders. Master Gardener Volunteer Program, Open House

Free Community Meal

Christ Lutheran Church,  State Route 44, Mantua will hold a Free Community Meal on Monday, October 20, from 5 to 6:30 PM. Please come and enjoy a delicious meal and a chance to visit with your friends and neighbors. The meal is held on the third Monday of each month.

Garrettsville Strong 1st Halloween House Decorating Contest.

Let’s get the holiday spirit started. The Harrison Family  dare all those who love the holidays to outdo our Halloween Decorations. All proceeds go to the #GarrettsvilleStrong Fund to help rebuild our village. Why let Garrettsville turn into a ghost town? There will be three winners in the catagories of Best Lighted, Most Spooky and All- around Best- Decorated.  The four judges will be out there looking at the entries on Oct 29th starting at 7pm until finished. Awards and bragging rights will go to the top three winners.  Homes entered will be mapped out and given a number to place in their yard. Maps will be available at different locations throughout the village for those who would like to view them.
