Something was cooking at the January 22, 2026 meeting of the Twentieth Century Club of Garrettsville, held at the home of Mary Furillo, who had assistance from co-hostesses Jan Boehm and Carol Torda. Members responded to roll call with the name (s) of their favorite cookbook. The works presented were varied, to say the least. They included the standards, such as Pillsbury, Good housekeeping and Betty Crocker–some of them in vintage editions (1909, 1914). Some of them were family hand-me-downs. Some were handmade and personal ad libs on favorite family culinary directions. Some were parts of a book series. At least one came from pretty far afield ( South Africa). Nearly all came with stories that did not necessarily come with success in cooking.
Shirley Danku presented the program on “Depression Cooking”…and cooking in general. Among the recipes that came up were “water pie”, cornmeal mush, egg soup and “poor man’s meal”–interesting, to say the least. Also on the menu, so to speak, was the U-tube personality, Clara Cannucciara who demo-ed her eggdrop soup, probably one of her “must go” recipes (containing everything in the fridge that must go.)
The program and the culinary tales that circulated throughout the meeting led right into the delicious refreshments which followed.
In a major date change, the February 19 meeting was cancelled; next meeting after that will be on March 5, 2026.
