Nelson Twp. – Township officials present at the second Nelson Township trustee meeting of June were Fiscal Officer John David Finney; Trustees Kevin Cihan, Anne Mae VanDerHoeven, and Joe Leonard.
The meeting was called to order by Leonard at 7:00pm.
The trustees were presented with meeting minutes from the previous meeting held on July 3rd, which were approved as presented. Fiscal officer Finney provided the trustees with documentation for bills and wages totaling $16,066.03 which were paid as presented. He also reviewed the township budget, reporting that the total of all township funds stand at $293,946. VanDerHoeven questioned charges from Geeville Auto. Finney explained that the charges were from purchases of a jack, bearings, batteries and other supplies. Finney asked the trustees for approval to renew the Medical Mutual plan. He also informed the trustees that he was extending his work schedule to allow time to catch up on audit preparation.
Following Finney’s reports, the trustees reviewed the zoning, Community House, and road reports. Community house caretaker Sandy Huzl’s report “looked good” and indicated that the Community House has been booked pretty steadily for the summer. The ballfield has also been in use fairly often.
The trustees discussed tree maintenance in the township right of way on Knolton Road. They decided to have Vanek get quotes for trimming back the trees to prevent issues with the power lines. Supply issues are preventing the township from acquiring coldpatch for some problem areas. The purchase was approved, but the mix will not be available until the fall.
Cihan informed the other trustees that he had informed Scotchman Electric that they had won the bid for energy efficiency projects at the garage. He also sent out letters of regret to those not selected for the project. Cihan also shared that Vanek had submitted costing for overlay work on Prentiss, Knowlton, and Nichols. He would like to get everything started to get the roads built up so they don’t lose the progress they’ve made this year.
VanDerHoeven reported that she had received pictures from Bill Steiner showing window glass in the recycling bin. Residents should be aware that signage on the bins clearly states what may and may not be recycled. The bins are not for trash, and only items on the accepted list should be placed in the bins. VanDerHoeven is following up with the Solid Waste District to find out whether a camera will be added to cover the bins.
Leonard turned the floor over to Terry Allen to talk about the Pixley Park pavilion. Allen reported that the pavilion finally has a permit so construction can begin as soon as the contractors are ready to go. Leonard then informed the other trustees that the Sheriff’s office will be working with the Rosses and the emergency services to develop an emergency response plan for the racetrack.
Following the township business, James A. Garfield School District superintendent Ted Lysiak gave a presentation on the upcoming Earned Income Tax School Issue. Following the presentation Lysiak led a question and answer session for those present.
The meeting was adjourned following Lysiak’s presentation
