The Farmers’ Markets will run from July 24 through October 2 every Wednesday from 3:00 – 6:30pm in the Skylane Bowling Alley parking lot. The DMRC will be hosting the 5th Annual Art on the Hill, a day-long festival of the arts is seeking artisans to sell and/or display their handmade work. The festival is on July 13, from 10am-6pm on East Prospect Street in Mantua. Booth space is just $45. There will also be live-continuous entertainment, raffles, and a wine tasting event. Pittsburgh Pastel Artist League

An exhibit by the Pittsburgh Pastel Artist League will be on display at the Trumbull Art Gallery until May 31.  The League was formed in 2002, and is comprised of members from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.  The paintings can be seen Tue-Sat from noon to 4 pm in our Main Gallery.  Admission is free.

Stream Quality Monitoring

June-August

Interested in taking a peek at aquatic critters, such as crayfish, dragonflies, water pennies, and caddisflies, which live in our local streams?  How about interacting with other individuals who share an interest in nature?  Then grab your water shoes and join the Millennium Youth Conservationists (MYC) team!  The MYC team will use kick seines, sediment sticks, pH test kits, and more while analyzing the health of area streams and rivers.  The adventure begins in June and concludes in August in streams throughout Geauga County.  Contact Colleen Sharp with the Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District by phone (440)834-1122 ext. 6 or email csharp@geaugaswcd.com for more information.

 

Spelling Bee Pre-Registration

May 13 marked the start of pre-registration for students to enter the TRTA Spelling Bee. The 27th Annual Spelling Bee is sponsored by Trumbull Retired Teachers and is set for July 11, at 1 p.m. at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds on Everett-Hull Road. Preregistration for grades 1 through 8 will begin on May 13, and is accepted until June 13. All preregistered spellers will get free admission to the fair with rides excluded. Let’s Build a Community

June 5 & 19

Let’s Build Community at the Center.  Open community days at the gymnasium at the old Mantua Center School, 11741 Mantua Center Rd. (just north of SR 82) will continue, but now on the first and third Wednesdays (changed from Tuesday) of each month, with reduced hours of 10am to 4 pm.  Potluck lunch at noon.  Meet with friends, or make some new ones.  Play cards or other games, learn quilt piecing or crochet.  Help work a challenging new jigsaw puzzle which will be started on May first.  Not just for seniors!  Folks of all ages are invited, but youngsters must have supervision.

The Portage County Gardeners’ annual plant sale will be May 17 from 4 – 7 pm and May 18 from 9-2 pm at the Gardeners’ Center, 5154 S. Prospect St. (Rt. 44) in Rootstown. Perennials from member gardens, herbs, vegetable plants (some heirlooms), annuals, hanging baskets, planters, and exotic spring garden bulbs will all be for sale along with raffles, a bake shop and gifts for gardeners. “Life on the Rocks”

Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park, 12440 State Rt. 282 Garrettsville, OH 44231 May 18, 10:00 AM – Noon. Free offering.  Join Master Gardener and former ODNR Park Manager Mike Blakeman for a 1 mile interpretive hike to see the park’s spring wild flowers and explore its impressive plant diversity. Learn about the area’s unique geology and how many of the plants have adapted to growing on bare rock. This is a good opportunity to see and learn about the area’s spring wild flowers including the rare red trillium. Tree ID will be covered and include Canadian Hemlock and Yellow Birch, both associated more with colder northern climates. Wear sturdy footwear for rocky and uneven terrain. Rain or shine. A Bluegrass Music Show will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, May 18th, at the Shalersville Town Hall, located on S.R. 44 at S.R. 303.  Doors open at 6 p.m.

Concert on the Hill

Public Observing Night

May 25

On Saturday, May 25 Stephens Memorial Observatory of Hiram College will host a public observing night from 9:00 to 11:00 PM. Using the observatory’s marvelous century-old telescope, visitors will observe “The Lord of the Rings” – planet Saturn – as well as the beautiful M13 star cluster. The Observatory is located on Wakefield Road (Rt. 82) less than a quarter of a mile west of Route 700 in Hiram. Good sky conditions are critical to viewing; for updates and more information, see the observatory’s Web site: StephensObservatory.org or “@StephensObs” on Twitter. No reservations are required and there is no admission fee for observatory public nights. Cloudy skies at the starting time cancel the event and, in that case, the observatory will not open. There is no parking at the Observatory. Visitors may park on permissible side streets or in the nearby parking lot of Harrison’s Hideaway Convenience Store, 6821 Wakefield Road, a short distance east of the observatory.

“Supper at the Center”

June 12

On the second Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm, March thru November, the Mantua Center Christian Church (on the township green at the corner of SR82 and Mantua Center Road)  invites all who would enjoy the fellowship of a shared meal to “Supper at the Center.”  (This event broadens the invitation to meal for seniors formerly known as “Over the Hill.”)  Menu varies, but is a full meal, usually including a selection of homemade pies for dessert.  No reservations required.  A donation basket is passed, with any excess above expenses going to charitable causes selected by the women’s group of the church.

Autism 5k and walk

Akron’s Autism 5k and Walk, formerly Akron Walks for Autism, is the Autism Society of Greater Akron’s premier fundraising and autism awareness event.  Money raised stays local to support individuals with autism, their families, and the professionals who support them.  The event will be held on June 15 at Lock 3 in downtown Akron.  The Autism Society of Greater Akron provides vital programs and services to families living with autism in Summit, Stark, Wayne, Portage and Medina counties and is part of the Autism Society of Ohio. MGV Annual Gardening Event comes to Burton Century Village, June 19 from 10am – 4 pm. 100’s of plants, familiar and exotic, as well as unique one of a kind garden art pieces, fun attic treasures, divine desserts, free horticulture demonstrations and “ask the expert.”  A full day of fun activities.  Proceeds fund the Geauga Co. 8th Annual Golf Outing

8th annual Golf Outing for county citizens with developmental disabilities will be,  June 22 at Tanglewood National Golf Club, 8745 Tanglewood Trail, Chagrin Falls, OH 44023. Modified Shotgun Start at 1pm. Dinner and  prizes will follow at 6:00 pm. Farmers Market

June 22-Oct 12

The Rotary Club of Mantua is sponsoring the 9th annual Farmers Market. The location will be at the Christ Lutheran Church parking lot at 10827 S.R 44, in Mantua.  The market will run every Saturday, from June 22 – October 12. The hours will be 9am-12:30pm.  The cost is $5.00 if you sign up for 8 week-ends or more.  For those who sign up for less the cost is $7.00. This year the produce vendors will specialize in Heirloom vegetables and flowers.  All other vendors’  items will be made from scratch.New vendors are being accepted.  Applications may be obtained by contacting Dean Olson. 330-351-3035

Ride and Raise funds for our local Veterans.

Motorcyclists can participate in a 2-hour scenic ride through beautiful Geauga County on Sunday, June 30, 2013. The ride starts at Geauga County Fairgrounds in Burton, OH (14373 N Cheshire St) and will be led by Sheriff Dan McClelland and his dog, “Midge”. Registration opens at 8:00am and the $25.00 per motorcycle fee includes breakfast. Sponsorship Opportunities For Motorcycle Run Deadline June 30. Become a Sponsor of the ride to help Geauga County Veterans who qualify with home repairs and renovations. The funds raised from this year’s event will go to purchase building materials and supply quality construction supervision courtesy of Geauga County Habitat for Humanity.
