Family-to-Family Education Program registration under way
Registration is now open for the Portage County Family-to-Family Education Program, a free, 12-week class for families and others who have a loved one with a mental illness. The class will run every Tuesday starting March 22, 6:30 to 9 p.m., at the Church of Aurora located at 146 Chillicothe Rd. in Aurora.

A national program through NAMI, the class is taught by NAMI-trained family members and includes presentations, discussion and interactive exercises. The free class is co-sponsored by  the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Portage County and the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Portage County and provides education and support to help families and others who have a loved one with mental illness to better understand the disorders, behavior, treatments and impact. Some of the topics covered will include the types of mental illness, medications and side effects, how to communicate more effectively with your loved one, recent changes in mental illness courts, medical insurance, and more.

NAMI Portage County is a local chapter of the national NAMI organization that brings together people with mental illness and their families to work on improving the lives of people with mental illness. For more information, go to www.namiportagecounty.org

4-H All Stars
4-H All Stars are now enrolling new members for the coming year. Youth must be 5-18 years as of Jan 1st, 2016 and live in Portage County. Our club offers many projects: small animals, sewing, cooking, quilting, photography, electricity, wood working, small engines and many more. We meet in Nelson Township. Kindergarten Registration

The James A. Garfield School District is now taking reservations for Kindergarten registration for children that will turn age 5 before September 30, 2016. Registration will take place on Friday, March 18th, Monday, March 21st, and Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016. Please call the Elementary School office at 330-527-2184 to schedule an appointment.

Immunization Clinics
The Geauga County Health District offers walk-in immunization clinics for children and adolescents through age 18. Residents must present an immunization record as well as a primary insurance card. If your child doesn’t have insurance coverage, immunization are provided free of charge. Call 440-279-1900 for more information.

Lenten Fish Fry

Lenten fish fry at Newton Falls VFW every Friday during lent and Good Friday. Feb 12th-March 18th from 4-8pm and March 25th from 3-8pm. Dinner includes fried or baked fish, bread, and 3 sides of your choice. Cost is $9. Hosted by the Newton Falls Athletic Booster Club. Proceeds support the athletes. The polls show the January “cook of the month”, our own Tom, did an excellent job with all thumbs up. So now our “cook of the month” of February, Miss Wendelin from the First Baptist Church in Garrettsville, has to raise the bar. I’m told an amazing dinner is planned so come out and support Miss Wendelin and her team. Feb. 25th from 5-6:30 pm at the Renaissance Family Center.

Fish Fry Fridays

Pork Chop Dinner

On the 27th of February there will be a stuffed pork chop dinner at the Braceville United
Methodist Church off of St. Rt. 82 in the center of Braceville. The dinner begins at 4 and we serve until 6:30 unless food runs out. The dinner includes mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, cole slaw, applesauce, homemade desserts, bread, coffee, tea or punch. The cost is $10 for adults and $4 for children. Takeouts are available.

The 8th annual Portage Environmental Conservation Awards Dinner will be April 30th. The dinner steering committee is seeking nominations for potential awardees to be honored at this event. Nominations should include the nominee’s name and contact information, along with a paragraph describing their contribution to Portage County’s environmental conservation. Pancake & Sausage Breakfasts

The Parkman Chamber of Commerce is hosting their 48th annual Pancake and Sausage Breakfasts at the Parkman Community House (16295 Main Market – Rt. 422) on March 1, 8, 15, and 22 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Adults eat for $8; children – $4 (Pre-schoolers are free). Adult take-outs are also available. Our pancakes are served on real plates (no disposables here) and we use only real Geauga County maple syrup. Our own secret recipe is used for our sausage patties. Astronomy Event at Morgan Preserve

Join Portage Parks Sky Ranger Guy Gillespie to take a tour of the 2016 spring sky. If you have your own telescope, bring it with you to learn some best viewing practices. We will also learn how to make a pocket solar system. Dress for the weather, bring snacks and a flashlight. BioBuddies: Rock Hounds

The Life of Jesus
March 16
Don’t miss “The Life of Jesus,” being performed at St. Ambrose church in Garrettsville, on March 16th at 7:00pm. This unique, special performance will re-create the life of Jesus Christ, starting with the nativity and ending with his glorious resurrection. It will also include parts of his life, his passion and his death. Performed by adults from St. Ambrose parish, it will transpire on stage, in the church, behind a large white screen. There will be a bright light on behind the screen, and the church lights will be off, projecting the scenes in shadow only. Between acts, pictures will be displayed on the screen and live inspirational music will add to this spectacular performance. Admission is free and refreshments will be served afterwards. Do not miss this event!

The Stations of the Cross in Shadow

Join us for The Stations of The Cross performed by St. Ambrose and St. Michael Youth Ministry Friday, March 18th at 7:00pm at St. Ambrose Church in Garrettsville. This extravagant show will feature The Stations of The Cross performed in shadow and include live music. It will also include renderings of The Last Supper, The Agony in the Garden, and the resurrection of Jesus. A Lenten soup and bread supper is offered after the show in the church fellowship hall. Admission is free for both the show and meal. Free will donations will be gratefully accepted. Please don’t miss this inspirational Lenten event!

Casino Bus Trip

Windham Softball and Baseball casino bus trip to Presque Isle in Erie, PA will be March 19th. Bus leaves from Windham High School at 1:30pm, returning by 11pm. Cost is $40 per ticket, each person receives $25 free game play (must have driver’s license to receive), 50/50 and door prizes. All proceeds benefit the building of the baseball/softball field. “What Dreams May Come”

Community Center ReOpens
March 22
The Community Center at Mantua Center will reopen March 22nd. A special feature for that day only will be a Pop-up Library from which you can check out books, and a short program at 1 pm about library services. Other activities include a painting group at 9:30, a sewing project, jigsaw puzzle, board games available, or just sit and chat. For potluck lunch at noon, bring food to share; tableware provided.The Community Center is located in the cafeteria wing of the old Mantua Center School just north of SR82 on Center Road. The hours are 9:30am to 3pm.

Hiram Community Trust Grants

Northern Portage Relay For Life
Register Today!
The 2016 Northern Portage Relay for Life 5k & 1 Mile run event will take place at Sunny Lake Park on May 7th, starting at 8:30AM. Anyone wishing to participate should register online at www.NPortageRFL5k.
Each participant will receive the 2016 event t-shirt and runner package. Anyone who signs up for the 5K will receive a 2016 custom finisher medal and official race bib, as well as official race timing to track individual finishing times. This year 5K runners have a chance to win a prize for being the fastest finisher in their age group. The top 3 male and top 3 Ffemale finishers in the 5K will also receive additional prizes.
