New Ministries Format

Saturday Afternoons

The new ministries format is now taking place at the church of God in Windham.   Group meetings and discussions are now taking place each Saturday afternoon at 5pm.  The group is meeting at the parsonage at 9004 N Main St.  This group is planning the entire revamping or the church from organization to ministries.  Everyone who is interested in attending and being a part is welcome to come.  For questions or more information you can call 330-671-1426

Community Center

The Community Center at Mantua Center, is free and open to all, regardless of age (supervised children welcome) or place of residence, every Wednesday 10:00am to 8:00pm, in the old Mantua Center School 11741 Center Road, just north of SR82. Salsa Tasting Contest

Sept 21

The Annual Geauga Fresh Farmers Market Salsa Tasting Contest will take place Sept 21st from 10-Noon. If you think your salsa recipe is the best-tasting in town, enter it into the Annual Salsa Tasting Contest. There will be two categories: mild and hot. Bring a quart of salsa to the market booth before 9:30am next Saturday. Mark it with your name and identify it as mild or hot. Past years have brought salsas made with a variety of local fruits and vegetables – peaches, watermelon, tomatoes, tomatillos, corn and pumpkin. Ingredients must be local – no mango or pineapple salsa! Customers and vendors are encouraged to enter their favorite salsa. Everyone can taste and vote. The Market is located in the South Russell Village parking lot at Rt. 306/Chillicothe Rd. and Bell Rd.  Hours are 9:00-Noon every Saturday, rain or shine, until early October. Spaghetti Dinner

A Spaghetti Dinner will be held Sept 21st from 4-7pm at the Western Reserve Masonic Lodge on St. Rt. 88 in West Farmington. Dinner includes salad, bread, pie and coffee. Cost is $7.00 for adults, $4.50 for ages 5-12 and free for 5 and under. Carry-outs are available at $7.50. Come join us and tell you friends!

 

Black Bear Valley

Sept 22

Explore this remote section of the Akron Watershed that has had numerous reports of black bear activity with naturalist Bob Faber. This sprawling woodland near Hiram Rapids stretches from the uplands along Tilden Road to the Cuyahoga River. We will search for signs of bears and other wildlife in this area of upland forests and a wildlife rich floodplain along the Cuyahoga River. This is an off-trail walk that may require sloshing through shallow water and some mud. Sept 22nd from 1-3pm. Fee: $6 for members of the Friends of the Hiram College Field Station ($10 for non-members). Directions will be provided at the time of registration. Hubs Square Dance Club

Fun + Friendship + Fitness!  That’s Western Style Square Dancing. The Hubs Square Dance Club is now accepting reservations for new dancers.  Beginner Dances, with the first night free, will  begin on Monday, Sept. 23 at Bainbridge Community Church, RT. 306, just south of Rt. 422 beginning at 7 pm. The Hubs Square Dance Club has been dancing since 1970 and invites all ages to participate in square dancing. Get out of the Rut! Bi Monthly Blood Drive

It is time for our bi monthly blood drive at the Newton Falls United Methodist church, at 336 Ridge Rd. It will be held on Sept 25th from noon to 6 PM. in our fellowship hall and we hope you can come and help us out, as there is always a need for blood. It is our “lifeline to life”. We have a piano player or door prizes or free clothing give away. RFC is for everyone, we would love to have you join our RFC family.  We are more than a pretty building. Portage County 4-H & Mantua Masonic Lodge are hosting a Swiss Steak dinner Sept 28th from 5-7pm.  Dinner includes Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, green beans or corn, applesauce, bread, dessert, and your choice of coffee or punch. Corn Hole Tournament

First Christian Church Craft Show

The First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Ravenna is gearing up for its 3rd Annual Craft Show on Saturday, September 28, 2013 from 9 am

to 3 pm.  The church is located at 420 South Prospect St. in Ravenna.  Some of the items for sale are: hand crafted jewelry; maple products; crocheted

items of every kind; quilts; floral arrangements and personalized art framed and printed at the show.

Craig Beach Fire Victims & Gift Show Fundraiser will be held September 28 from 12-5 pm at 175 E. Broad St in Newton Falls Ohio. This event is being held for a local family in need after a horrific fire destroyed their home. Crafts, vendors, 50/50, silent auction, food and more. Chili Cook-Off

Baking Contest & Auction

Attention Bakers – it’s time to showcase your talent at New Hope Baptist Church Old Fashioned Hoedown Fundraiser on Sept 28, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The baking contest is limited to cakes and pies only. Judging will be based on creativity and TASTE! Bakers need to make enough of their items for samples and then make a separate item to be auctioned off at the end of the hoedown. Fall Luncheon

Benefit Concert by Gail Mangeri

Christian Singer-Songwriter Gail Mangeri of Hiram will be praising God with her beautiful voice and the inspiring messages of her lyrics. She will be joined by two of her talented  children: Angela and Robert. The concert is open and free to the public. A freewill offering will be taken to help church members affected by the flash-flooding in this summer’s storm. Refreshments and fellowship will be shared during a short intermission. Homecoming at Faith Evangelical Church

An old fashioned  Homecoming celebration will be held at Faith Evangelical Church in Garrettsville on Sept 29. Sunday school will begin at 9:45 with morning worship to follow at 11. There will be a covered dish dinner at 12:30. The afternoon services (outside weather permitting) will include the Stoney River Band with the Klein Family. Pilates Class

Ravenna Recreation offers Pilates on Sundays and Wednesdays.  Classes will be held from 5-6 pm from Oct 2 – 30 at Tower Lodge in John Tontimonia City Park.  Participants should bring a water bottle and a mat.  Class fee is $32 for city taxpayers and $37 for non-city taxpayers or an $8.00 drop in fee. The Crestwood Class of 1988 celebrates 25 years with a memorial  All Trail 5K celebrating the lives of 3 students from our class taken by cancer. The a-MAZE-ing race for Cancer Research Oct 5th.Packet pickup and event morning registration 8am-8:45am, 5k start 9am, Family 2mile fun walk 9:15 am. Run or walk through one of NE Ohio’s largest corn mazes and trail around the 180 acres of the working farm, tackle obstacles like hay bales and tires. Trail and maze will be marked. 12th Annual Mesopotamia Fall Heritage Day

Harvest Moon Pot Luck & Pig Roast

A pork dinner will be held at the Nelson Community House on Oct 5th, doors open at 2pm. Residents are asked to bring a family size dish to share, if you don’t bring a dish, a fee will be charged. Serving times vary as to when the pig is done and rested. There will be side dishes of potatoes, pasta salads, green beans, corn, carrots, lettuce salad, chicken, roll and butter, iced tea, coffee and an assortment of desserts. There will also be a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and bake sale. Winners need not be present. Boy Scouts of Troop65 will be helping with set up, clearing dishes, and clean up after the event. This event is to benefit the Pixley Park Development Committee for the building of a picnic pavilion and new playground equipment.

 

Fall Frolic Dance

Portage County Chapter #600 of International Parents Without Partners will have an Oktoberfest dinner Oct 5thfrom 6:30-7:30pm at the Ritchie Memorial Shelter House, 109 West Ave Tallmadge Ohio. Contra Dance

Troy Township Contra Dance will be Oct 5th at the Troy Community House (13950 Main Market Road / Route 422; Burton, Ohio 44021). All ages join in the irresistibly fun atmosphere of Contra Dance and live folk music.  Lesson at 6:30pm.  Dance 7:30-10:30pm.  Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for student and $25 per family.

 

Senior Citizen’s Luncheon

The LaDue Shuffle and a Welshfield Lunch

Join naturalist Bob Faber to explore the country road and the mature forest trails along the western shore of La Due Reservoir. Loons, swans and other waterfowl rest on the waters and eagles fly overhead as the various species prepare for the winter migration. Wild turkeys patrol the forest while beavers and muskrats scour the wetlands in anticipation of winter storms. Bring binoculars and be prepared to get a tad muddy. Following our exploration we will have the option for delicious lunch at the nearby Welshfield Inn (not included in fee). Exploration will be Oct 6thfrom 9:30-11:30am. Fee: $6 for members of the Friends of the Hiram College Field Station ($10 for non-members). Directions will be provided at the time of registration. Burton Art Show

The annual Burton Art Show, sponsored by the Friends of the Burton Public Library, will be held from October 8 – 13 at the library.  All artists (16 years and older) that live, work, or attend school in Geauga County or Lake County are invited to submit their work.  Each artist is permitted a maximum of three (3) entries.  Works of art include paintings (all media), drawings, photography, sculpture and jewelry.  There is a $5 non-refundable entry fee for each entry.  Cash awards will be given for Best of Show and for 1st Place and 2nd Place in Art and Photography.  The judges this year are Christopher Ryan for all media except Photography and Vaughn Bell for Photography.  Entries must be brought to the library on Monday, September 30 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m.   Entry forms with complete entry rules may be obtained at the Burton Public Library or online from the library’s website:  www.burton.lib.oh.us     Please call Kathy Schaefer at the Burton Public Library (440-834-4466) for additional information.

 

Holiday Craft Bazaar
