Community Service Day

Sept 14

St. Joseph Church in Mantua is organizing Walk With Us, a Community Service Day, on Sept 14th from 1- 5 pm. Projects for the event include a community-wide drive for paper products, laundry and kitchen cleaning products and personal hygiene items for the 4C’s in Mantua and for Catholic Charities in Portage and Stark Counties, performing at area nursing homes, working on the grounds at St. Joseph’s Parish which is used by a variety of community groups, and more. If you would like to join in this effort, participants will be gathering at St. Joseph Church’s Hughes Hall, 11045 St. Joseph Blvd. in Mantua at 1:00 p.m. for assignments. Everyone will return to the parish at 4:00 p.m. for food, fun and fellowship. Donations of paper and cleaning products and personal hygiene items may be brought to Saturday or Sunday Mass. The day is organized by the Parish Evangelization Project and is for everyone in the parish community, the active and inactive, young and old, parents and children, registered parishioners who don’t attend and those unaffiliated with any community, and anyone who would like to lend a hand.  We hope to have you join us.  And bring a friend.  Please contact Peg Haney (330-274-2268 or phaney@stjosephmantua.com) with any questions.

Newton Falls Chili Cook off Call for Cookers

New Ministries

Saturdays

The new ministries format is now taking place at the Church of God in Windham.   Group meetings and discussions are now taking place each Saturday afternoon at 5 pm.  The group is meeting at the parsonage at 9004 N Main St.  This group is planning the entire revamping of the church from organization to ministries.  Everyone who is interested in attending and being a part is welcome to come.  For questions or more information you can call 330-671-1426

Swiss Steak Dinner

The Nelson UMC will be hosting their fall Swiss steak dinner on Sept 14th at the Nelson Community House on the circle. Dinner will be served from 4:30-7pm. The “famous” Swiss steak dinner consists of a generous portion of steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn casserole, coleslaw, Raphael rolls and butter, beverages, and homemade desserts. Carry out is available; the price is still $9 for adults.

 

Spaghetti Dinner

Windham United Methodist Church is hosting a Spaghetti Dinner on Sept 14th, from 4:30 – 7:00pm. All you can eat includes spaghetti with meat sauce, coleslaw, bread & butter, homemade dessert and beverage. Adults $7.00, Children 5-12 $4.00, under 5 free.  Takeouts are available!

 

Bluegrass Junction

Bluegrass is back at Bluegrass Junction! The first Bluegrass Music Show of the season will be held from 7 to 11 pm on Sept 14th, at the Shalersville Town Hall, located on S.R. 44 at S.R. 303.  Doors open at 6 p.m. The event will feature three bands Coney Carver & the Rainbow Valley Boys, Young & Blue, and The Roy Greathouse Band. Stephens Memorial Observatory

Stephens Memorial Observatory of Hiram College will be open from 9:00 to 11:00 PM, Sept 14.  The observatory’s Open Night calls for viewing of Earth’s Moon and, if conditions allow, the Andromeda Galaxy and the Persius Double Cluster using the Observatory’s grand vintage telescope. Other objects may also be viewed if time and weather permit. The Observatory is located on Wakefield Road (Rt. 82) less than a quarter of a mile west of Route 700 in Hiram. Portage County Gardeners Workshop

Portage County Gardeners are hosting a Saturday workshop; open to the public, on Sept 14th at 10:00 am at their Center located at, 5154 S. Prospect St. (Rt. 44) in Rootstown. All Mustang Car Show

The Northeastern Ohio Mustang Club will hold its 5th Annual All Mustang Car Show on Sept 15 at Montrose Ford in Akron from 10am-3pm, rain or shine. Proceeds will benefit the Copley Fire and Rescue Association and the Warrior’s Journey Home Ministry. The cost to enter your Mustang is $10 with 18 classes and best of show to be judged. National Back to Church

Monthly Breakfast

Amvets Post 112 will be resuming their monthly breakfast on Sept 15th from 9am-noon at Post 112 on Broad Street in Newton Falls. Prices are $6.00 for adults, $4.00 for children 5-12 and free for children 4 and under. Breakfast includes scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes, French toast, home fries, fruit cup, assorted juices, coffee, milk, tea and milk. Early Learning Resources Presentation

The Early Childhood Subcommittee of the Geauga Family First Council is sponsoring an Early Learning Resources Presentation / Exhibition, Sept 17, from 5-7 pm.  Held at the Geauga Park District’s West Woods Nature Center; 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87) Russell, OH 44072. Pricetown Cooked Supper

The next home cooked supper at Pricetown Methodist Church, 4640 Pritchard-Ohltown Rd, Newton Falls, will feature meatloaf, mashed potatoes, vegetable, salad, roll, homemade desserts and a beverage. Garfield Alumni Banquet

Black Bear Valley

Explore this remote section of the Akron Watershed that has had numerous reports of black bear activity with naturalist Bob Faber. This sprawling woodland near Hiram Rapids stretches from the uplands along Tilden Road to the Cuyahoga River. We will search for signs of bears and other wildlife in this area of upland forests and a wildlife rich floodplain along the Cuyahoga River. This is an off-trail walk that may require sloshing through shallow water and some mud. Sept 22nd from 1-3pm. Fee: $6 for members of the Friends of the Hiram College Field Station ($10 for non-members). Directions will be provided at the time of registration. The LaDue Shuffle and a Welshfield Lunch

Join naturalist Bob Faber to explore the country road and the mature forest trails along the western shore of La Due Reservoir. Loons, swans and other waterfowl rest on the waters and eagles fly overhead as the various species prepare for the winter migration. Wild turkeys patrol the forest while beavers and muskrats scour the wetlands in anticipation of winter storms. Bring binoculars and be prepared to get a tad muddy. Following our exploration we will have the option for delicious lunch at the nearby Welshfield Inn (not included in fee). Exploration will be Oct 6thfrom 9:30-11:30am. Fee: $6 for members of the Friends of the Hiram College Field Station ($10 for non-members). Directions will be provided at the time of registration. Burton Art Sho

The annual Burton Art Show, sponsored by the Friends of the Burton Public Library, will be held from October 8 – 13 at the library.  All artists (16 years and older) that live, work, or attend school in Geauga County or Lake County are invited to submit their work.  Each artist is permitted a maximum of three (3) entries.  Works of art include paintings (all media), drawings, photography, sculpture and jewelry.  There is a $5 non-refundable entry fee for each entry.  Cash awards will be given for Best of Show and for 1st Place and 2nd Place in Art and Photography.  The judges this year are Christopher Ryan for all media except Photography and Vaughn Bell for Photography.  Entries must be brought to the library on Monday, September 30 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m.   Entry forms with complete entry rules may be obtained at the Burton Public Library or online from the library’s website:  www.burton.lib.oh.us     Please call Kathy Schaefer at the Burton Public Library (440-834-4466) for additional information.

The Portage County Gardeners’ Herb Society is seeking talented crafters and artisans to participate in a Winter Craft Festival on December 7th at the Gardeners’ Center in Rootstown. Grant Opportunity Available

The Geauga County Sunshine Shop Board is now accepting grant requests from Geauga County Not-for-Profit organizations who serve individuals and families in crisis or in need.

A seven member board governs The Sunshine Shop, which has been in operation for over 30 years. The mission of The Sunshine Shop is to provide assistance to low income individuals and families residing in Geauga County. Funds are raised through The Sunshine Thrift Shop located at the Geauga County Fairgrounds. The Sunshine Shop sells donated clothing and household items.

Grant requests should be a single page and include your organizations contact information, purpose or mission, who you serve, what the grant money would be used for and how much you are requesting. Previous grant awards ranged from $500 to $1,500.

Requests should be mailed to: The Sunshine Shop Board, P.O Box 917, Burton, OH, 44021. Requests must be postmarked by October 4, 2013.
