American Legion Breakfast

Mondays

Breakfast every Monday at the American Legion Post #674.  Time: 7:30 to 11:00 a.m.  Place 9130 Center Street in Windham.  Carry out available.  Call 326-3188.

Community Center Closed For Winter

There will be no more Community Center days at the old Mantua Center School until March.  The committee thanks all those who have come this past year,  adnd wishes you a safe and healthy winter.  Watch for publicity about reopening in early March.

JAG Kindergarten Registration

The James A. Garfield School District is now accepting kindergarten registration information for your child that will turn age 5 before September 30, 2015. Registration will take place on March 24, 25, and 26 at the elementary.  Please call the Elementary School office at 330-527-2184 to schedule an appointment for your child as soon as possible.   We also require copies of the following documents at the time of registration: Child’s certified birth certificate, Social Security card, Immunization Records, Custody Papers (If applicable), Proof of Residency (property tax statement, deed, rental agreement or voter registration card), Driver License or photo identification of custodial person enrolling student.

Valentine’s Day Wedding at the Garrettsville Library

Are you a couple looking for a unique venue for your wedding? Get married on Valentine’s Day at the Garrettsville Library, a branch of the Portage County District Library. Weddings conducted at the Garrettsville Library will be simple civil ceremonies conducted by a state-licensed officiant. The marriages will be legal and completely free.  To sign up, go to the reference desk at the Garrettsville Library. The Garrettsville Library is located at 10482 South Street in Garrettsville, OH 44231. 

Newton Falls Kindergarten Registration

February-March

Registration for children entering the Newton Falls School System for the 2013-2014 school year was held in February and the beginning of March.  If you have not yet registered your child for next year’s kindergarten, it is important that you do so immediately as there is a mandated screening time which will take place at the end of April. You do NOT need an appointment, but please only come during these times:  8:30-11:30 or 12:30-2:30.  It is not necessary to bring your child at this time.  To qualify for kindergarten, child must be 5 by August 1, 2013.  If you have any questions, you may contact the school secretary, Mrs. Dee Howard, at 330-872-5225 (ext. 2301).   

Crestwood Band Citrus Sale

The Crestwood Band annual citrus sale starts on Wednesday, January 14  and runs through Wednesday, January 28, 2015.   Proceeds from the sale will be used to support the Instrumental Music Departments in the Intermediate, Middle and High schools.  You can order three ways:  contact a Crestwood band member or 330-569-8084 or you can order online at www.doorstepdirect.org.  Please enter the school code OH11184 so we receive credit for the sale.  Crestwood Band Patrons have been conducting this sale to support the instrumental music programs for over 40 years. Thank you for your continued support.

Cav’s Merchandise Raffle

The JAG Sports Boosters are holding a raffle for Cleveland Cavalier merchandise.  First prize are a pair of  Lebron James game worn shoes; 2nd prize a Shawn Marion signed basketball and 3rd prise is a Love Jersey. Tickets are available for  $5.00 each  and can be purchased before all home boys and girls basketball games, or by contacting Jim Pfleger at 330-527-0039 or by email jpfleger@jagscools.org.   Drawing is 2/20/15 during the last home boys game,  winner need not be present.  Proceeds benefit the stadium fund.

Cheaper By the Dozen

The Garrettsville Curtains up Theatre is presenting “Cheaper By the Dozen”. The production is sponsored by: Ryser Insurance, Kent State’s Geauga/Trumbull campus, Carlson’s Funeral Home and Cremation Services, and Ohio Health Benefits LLC.  The production runs January 23 and 24 at 7pm. Doors open a half hour prior to curtains up. Tickets are available at the door in the Iva Walker Auditorium, located at 10235 State Route 88, Garrettsville, Ohio 44231. Ticket prices are: Adults $10.00, children under 12 and seniors over 65 $7.00 and groups of 15 or more are only $5.00 per person.

Stargazing Night

Join us on  January 24th, 2014 7:00 pm- 9:00pm as we look upward towards the heavens. A telescope will be available for viewing. You are encouraged to bring your own viewing devices as well. Garrettsville, OH 44231   Special note: Please dress according to the weather as the temperatures will be rather cold. Free Clothing Give Away

Free clothing giveaway will be Jan 24th from 9-noon at Mantua Center Christian Church, 4118 St. Rt. 82. We have lots of winter and spring clothing to choose from, all sizes, both genders. Linens, bags, shoes, boots are also available. No cost to anyone.

The Gleaning Project

The Gleaning Project Meeting has been rescheduled to  January 25th at 2 p.m. Meeting will be held at  Hiram Christian Church Education Building 6868 Wakefield Road Hiram, Ohio 44234.  Portage County Farmers who are interested in participating in gleaning projects with Hiram College are encouraged to attend. Steak Fry

The Garrettsville Eagles will be holding their monthly steak fry and grilled chicken dinner on Jan 31st from 4 – 7:30 pm. Choice of Porterhouse or Strip steak. Meals include choice of baked potato or French fries, green beans, salad and roll. Steak dinners are $13 and grilled chicken dinners are $8. Open to the public. Vital Impact Movie Night

Faith Evangelical Free Church, 10585 Windham-Parkman Rd., Garrettsville will be hosting a Vital Impact Movie Night Jan 31st at 6pm, free for 7th thru 12th grade. Movie showing will be “Grace Unplugged”, a Dove Award-winning movie. Cookies and punch will be served after the movie. All welcome!

Tumbling Classes

Ravenna Parks and Recreation has teamed up with American Kids Unlimited a leader in the area of children’s gymnastics.  American Kids Unlimited utilizes exclusive nationally evidence- based Motion Evolution Curriculum to ensure your child experiences emotional, physical and cognitive benefits.  The curriculum follows a standard format including warm-up, body position, stretching, and skill challenges.  The First session starts February 3, 201.  Each Tuesday evening; ages 3 – 4 will meet from 5p.m – 5:30p.m., ages 5 – 6 from 5:30p.m. – 6:00p.m.  Classes will be held at Tower Lodge at John Tontimonia City Park. A new class begins each month.  Participants who take multiple sessions will be eligible to perform at our annual recital in April.

Tae Kwon Do

New session of Tae Kwon Do will be held from February 6 to 26 at Lake Hodgson – Apco Lodge in Ravenna for ages 7 years to adults, male or female.  Tae Kwon Do emphasizes self-discipline, exercise, and martial art skills.  Instructors work with students individually and as a group on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Participants must have a mouth piece on first night.  Male students are required to wear protective gear after the second week. Cost is $40 for city residents and $45 for non-city residents and is paid the first night to the instructors. Monthly Dance

Portage County Chapter #600 Parents Without Partners will have its monthly dance on Feb 7th from 7:30-11:30pm at Ritchie Memorial Shelter House, 109 W. Ave., Tallmadge. Cost is $6 for members and $8 for nonmembers. Public welcome. Please call Warrine 330-322-9559 for more info. 

3rd Annual Youth Cheer Camp

Hiram College cheerleaders and coaches will teach youth participants, ages 5-12, in the one-day camp, as they work on developing their cheer skills. The camp will conclude with the opportunity to perform at the  Hiram cheerleaders at half time of the men’s basketball game versus DePauw University. The cost of the camp is $45 for early registration, which ends Jan 20. All early registrants are guaranteed a Hiram College cheerleading T-shirt and matching bow. NFYBSL – youth baseball/softball signups boys and girls ages 5-14 will be February 7 & 14 from 10:00 am- 2:00 pm (Sat.) and February 11 – 5:00-8:00 pm (Wed.) at the Newton Falls Community Center, 52 East Quarry. All new players must bring a *copy* of birth certificate.

All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti

Knights of Columbus Council #3350 is having an all you can eat spaghetti dinner on Feb 8th at Saint Mary’s social hall, 120 Maple Dr. Newton Falls, from 12-3pm. Dinner includes: Spaghetti, with or without meatballs, Italian bread, salad, coffee or punch, and dessert. Cost is $8.00 for adults, $3.00 for children age 6-11 and free for children 5 & under. Kid’s Cheer, Tumbling & Gymnastics

Ravenna Parks and Recreation has teamed up with American Elite Kids a leader in the area of children’s cheer, tumbling and gymnastics. All Star Academy Cheer Team targets FUN, entertainment, and education as primary goals helping prepare those for upcoming tryouts. This class is also great for those who are interested in being involved with a cheer team. This is a progressive class,  enabling participants to always take the next step to keep themselves challenged, learning and having fun. T-shirt included in the price. Registration will only be taken during the registration period December 8 through February 5. The program runs for 3 months beginning February 10, ending in April with a public performance. Cheer Team is limited to the first 20 participants to register.

Free Monthly Meal

Christ Episcopal Craft Show

Mark your calendar for the Christ Episcopal Craft Show, March 7th from 10-4 located at 2627 Atlantic St. NE, Warren, Oh 44483.  Admission is $2.00 and parking is FREE.  There are over 50 crafters/vendors to showcase their unique items and products.   A Chinese Auction will be held with baskets full of goodies to be given away.  Delicious hot food will also be available.  There is sure to be something for everyone.  Come out and join us for an enjoyable day of crafts, shopping and fun.  Invite all your family and friends!  Proceeds for the craft show go toward our outreach ministries at the church.
