Women’s Getaway Weekend at Camp Whitewood

All women 18 and older are welcome to attend a women’s getaway weekend at Camp Whitewood in Windsor, Ohio June 6-8th.

Dr. Seuss is this year’s theme with lots of fun-filled activities.  Come to relax and meet new friends.  There will be a tour of Amish stores on Friday, classes in stained glass and  glass etching, making biscotti and other crafts.  We offer boating, riflery, hiking, massages, and a campfire along with many surprises and time to enjoy the lovely surroundings.

Fee of $110 for the weekend covers meals, snacks, lodging and most activities or $40 to sample camp for Saturday only.  Don your favorite Dr. Seuss attire and join us.

Eagle Creek Conservation Club Youth Fishing Education Program

The Eagle Creek Conservation Club is presenting a free fishing clinic for all boys and girls ages 4 to 15 on Saturday, June 21, 2014 from 9:30am to 2pm. The program is aimed at teaching the basic fishing techniques needed to help kids get the most enjoyment out of their time spent on the water. The class is broken up into four segments, each lasting approximately 20 minutes. Anyone wishing to attend the event MUST PRE-REGISTER by June 14th, 2014. Spaces for this event are limited, so get your reservation made as soon as possible. The class will take place at the Eagle Creek Conservation Club, 5525 Eagle Creek Road, Leavittsburg, Ohio, 44430. Doors open at 9:30am and the program will begin at 10am. Lunch will be provided for all attendees after class. After lunch everyone will have the chance to enjoy some time fishing in beautiful Eagle Creek located directly behind the club. Geranium Sale

Newton Falls Kiwanis Club will hold its annual Geranium sale on May 16th at the corner of Broad St. and Milton Blvd. This fundraiser benefits our local projects, including monthly donations to the food-in-backpacks program and the junior Olympics.  We offer the same price as last year, $3.40 per plant. Annual Plant Sale

Grassroots Community Gardeners 11th Annual Plant Sale will be May 16 from 10am–5pm or May 17 from 10am–2pm at Nelson Community House on the Circle. Perennials, Annuals, Herbs & More, Starting at just $1. If you need to make room, dig up a few of your plants and bring them along. We’ll be glad to find them good homes. All proceeds benefit the beautification of local community gardens.

 

Upper Cuyahoga River Spring Hikes 

May 17

In conjunction with the Friends of the Crooked River’s, River Day event, ODNR’s Division of Natural Areas and Preserves will be hosting hikes in two preserves along the Upper Cuyahoga River. The hikes will include Mantua Bog State Nature Preserve and Tummonds Scenic River Preserve at the following times:  Mantua Bog – 11:00 am and Tummonds – 1:30 pm. For more information contact Adam Wohlever at (330)-527-5118. Special instructions: The Mantua Bog hike will begin at the intersection of Peck and Mennonite Rds. East of the Buchert Memorial Park in Mantua, Ohio. Visitors are requested to park at the Buchert Memorial Park located on East High St. and walk the Portage Park District Headwaters Trail east to Peck Rd. to begin the hike. Water resistant footwear is recommended. The Tummonds Scenic River Preserve hike will begin at the Glacial Esker Trail parking area located at the Mantua Village water treatment plant at Line St. and Mats Rd. in Mantua, OH.

 

Annual Plant Sale

The Silver Creek Garden Club will hold their annual plant sale on May 17th from 9- 4 at the home of Linda Klamer at 8127 Garfield Dr., Garrettsville, Oh.  This is our annual fund raiser which is used towards the purchase of the flowering baskets and planters in downtown Garrettsville. This year we will be donating 10% of our sales to the Garrettsville Strong Fund.

 

Benefit Concert

Benefit Concert, Art & Craft Silent Auction to aid merchant and their employees affected by the fire. Bluegrass Junction 

May 17

Join us at Bluegrass Junction for this season’s last night of great bluegrass music! The show will be held from 7-11 p.m. on May 17th, at the Shalersville Town Hall, located on S.R. 44 at S.R. 303.  Doors open at 6 p.m. The event will feature three bands Coney Carver & the Rainbow Valley Boys, Highway 57, and Matt Efaw & RFD. GFN Firefighter Association Benefit

Rolling Thunder

May 18

Hambden Congregational Church will be welcoming Rolling Thunder on May 18th @ 10:00 am for a Patriotic service that will honor all our Veterans, past & present. All are welcome and invited to attend. Motorcycles will meet in Chardon square at 9:30 am and will depart at 9:45 am for a short ride to the church. The service will be followed by a bike blessing and picnic at Hambden Township Park. Pancakes in the Park! Rain or Shine!

Freedom Greyhound Rescue of Aurora invites you on May 18th, to a delicious all you can eat pancake breakfast at Sunny Lake Park (885 Mennonite Rd. Aurora 44202 – boathouse pavilion) from 9am to 11am.  Let our team of volunteers cook you breakfast (pancakes, sausage, juice, coffee) while you enjoy the scenic view or a take 2 mile walk/jog around Sunny Lake.  Cost:  $6 adults, $4 kids 3-10 yrs., under 4 yrs. free!   Dog walkers welcome!

Free Meatloaf Dinner

Free meatloaf dinner will be held May 20th from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. everyone is invited to have a free meal and fellowship with us. Meal will include meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, cookies and a drink. This meal will be held at Covenant Bible Fellowship, 8146 High Street, Garrettsville. Crestwood High School baseball is teaming up with Mantua Corners Bar & Grille to raise money for baseball field upgrades.  On May 20, from 6-9 p.m. you can attend an all you can eat dinner at Mantua Corners Bar & Grille located at 11697 State Route 44 in Mantua, OH.  The menu includes all you can eat wings (traditional and boneless), pizza, pasta, salad, soda, water and coffee.  There will also be some discounted beer prices.  The cost is $15/person in advance of the event and $17/person at the door.  For an in advance ticket please contact John Bakalar at (330) 274-2214 ext. 403.  Please come and join us for the fun!

 

Community Center at Mantua Center

Come with a friend or make some new ones.  The cafeteria wing of the old Mantua Center School (Center Rd just north of SR82) is open from 9:00 to about 3:00 every Tuesday except election days for socializing and a variety of activities.  A watercolor group meets at 9:30.  There’s a picture puzzle or maybe two in progress.  There’s usually someone who available to advise on quilting, knitting, or crochet projects.  We bring food to share for potluck lunch, served about noon.  Cards and various board games are available. The Community Center has begun re-opening at 5:00 for a potluck supper at 5:30.  Anyone is welcome to come, but if you are someone who eats way too many meals alone you are especially invited.  Men and women, single, widowed, or divorced, come share a meal at the Center.

 

Home Cooked Supper

The next Home Cooked Supper at Pricetown Methodist Church, 4640 Pritchard-Ohltown Rd, Newton Falls, Ohio will be held from 5 to 6:30 pm on May  21st.  The meal will feature: chicken bake, Haluska (cabbage and noodles) or mashed potatoes, vegetable,  super salad, rolls & dessert. Cost $7 for adults; $5 for kids 10 and under. Carry out available. This will be the last dinner until September.

 

Rummage Sale, Chinese Auction, Bake Sale

Football & Cheerleading Sign Ups

The Newton Falls Little Tigers will be holding signups for football and cheerleading on May 24th  at the Community center stone pavilion. The signups will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The signups are for children 6 yrs. old to 12 yrs. old as of July 31st. Please bring a copy of child’s birth certificate for the league. Spelling Bee Pre-Registration

The annual spelling bee, sponsored by Trumbull County Retired Teachers, will be held on July 10th at 1 p.m. at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds. Gorge Hike

Join professional naturalist staff from the ODNR’s Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, as we traverse the hemlock lined sandstone gorge and waterfalls of Sheepskin Hollow State Nature Preserve in Columbiana County. The hike will begin at 1:00pm. Sheepskin Hollow is located at 50991 Pancake-Clarkson Rd Negley, OH  44441. No registration is required. For more information contact Adam Wohlever at (330)-527-5118. Special Instructions: This is a difficult hike and not recommended for small children or inexperienced hikers. Parking is along Pancake-Clarkson Rd. near the power line right of way.

 

2014 Freedom Dog Fest

June 1st, Aurora Parks & Recreation Department & Freedom Greyhound Rescue of Aurora invite you to attend the 2014 Freedom Dog Fest. All breeds welcome! Little Tigers 5th Annual Golf Outing

The Newton Falls Little Tigers will be holding their 5th annual golf outing at the Olde Dutch golf course in Lake Milton on June 7th. The 4-man scramble starts with an  8 a.m. shotgun with registration starting 7:00. The 4-man scramble costs $70.00 per person and will include coffee/ doughnuts, lunch provided by SUBWAY, steak dinner, and beverages. There will also be prizes on every hole and side games. Geauga County Master Gardener Volunteers Fairy Gardens

Blood Drive

Falls Home Remodeling will be sponsoring another Blood Drive Here at our office at 104 a- East Broad St. Newton Falls on June 9th from 2-6 pm. The additional Blood drive is used to replace the Blood drives that were formerly held at the Methodist Church. Please come out and donate blood to help others and save a life! Hambden Grange Concerts

June 21 & July 19

The Huntsburg Grange has bandstand concerts set for June 21 with Boys Are Back, and July 19 with Fort Huntsburg Band.  Concerts start at 6 PM, rain or shine.  If it rains, concerts are held on the town hall stage.   Bring your lawn chair.  Refreshments will be available. The Friends of Melana 5k Run/1 Mile Walk

June 29

The Friends of Melana Foundation is organizing the 4th Annual Friends of Melana 5k run and 1 mile fun run/walk to be held on June 29th at Garrettsville Summerfest. All proceeds go towards research for children’s glioma brain cancer. Event registration can be done online at www.stopkidscancer.org. click on ‘Events.’ Registration will also take place the day of the event on the front lawn of St. Ambrose rectory on Freedom St. in Garrettsville. Annual Spelling Bee

Chaney High School Reunion

The Chaney High School Class of 1974 40th Class Reunion scheduled for the third weekend of July.  Please save the date and spread the word. The celebration starts on July 18th and the CHS Class of 1974 Invites All Chaney 70’s Graduates to “Come As You Were, Friday Night Fever Party”  at Kuzmans  Lounge.  Cost $5.00 per person. Geauga West Friends of the Library Now Accepting Donations for the Annual Summer Book Sale

The spring book sale sponsored by the Geauga West Friends of the Library was a great success. Thanks to everyone for their support – for donations, for volunteers, and for everyone who came to purchase books and other items. The Friends are now accepting donations for their annual summer book sale which will take place July 30 – August 2. Bring gently used or new children’s and adult books, collectibles, comic books, CDs, DVDs, audio books on CD, puzzles and games for adults and children, sheet music, coffee table books, and prints to the Geauga West Library during regular library hours.  No textbooks or encyclopedias, please.  A receipt for your donation is available. Funds raised from the book sale support adult and children’s programming at the Geauga West Library.  The Geauga West Library is located at 13455 Chillicothe Road in Chesterland, next to West Geauga High School.  The phone number is 440-729-4250.
