All New Lenten Pierogi & Fish Dinner

The Mantua Knights of Columbus are once again hosting their Annual Lenten Dinners every Friday during Lent 3/07- 4/11. Location will be at their hall on S.R.44 (North of S.R. 82). Door will be open 5:00-8:00 p.m. Serving ends at 7:30 pm. Enjoy your choice of combinations of pierogis, all new baked, beer battered cod or breaded shrimp. Takeout’s available after 4:30 p.m. by calling 330-274-2576. Prices are adults $12.00, seniors $11.00, kids 12 and under $6.00 for the pierogi and fish sticks or pierogi and shrimp dinners (as always mac and cheese, available as a substitute for kids side). Newton Falls Football Fish Fry Fridays

The Western Reserve Kiwanis is proud to announce that proceeds from our next All-U-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner will go to the #Garrettsville Strong Fund & the Nelson-Garrettsville Community Cupboard!  Dinner is April 11th from 5-7 pm in Dix & the Ballroom in the Hiram College Kennedy Center. Dinner includes spaghetti with choice of meat or marinara sauce, salad, garlic bread, beverage, and ice cream, all for $6.00 for adults, children 8 and under FREE! Carry-out available! Fish Fry      

April 11 & 18 

Fried fish, French fries, coleslaw and beverages will be served from 4:30 – 7:00 p.m. at the Parkman Community House (16295 Main Market/St. Rt. 422 – 1/4 mile east of St. Rt. 528 in Parkman).  Adult dinners are $9.00 (Dine-in or take-out).  Desserts will be available for an additional donation.  (An alternate kid-friendly dinner will also be available for $5.00 each.)  Sponsored alternately by Parkman Boy Scout Troop 76, Cub Scout Troop 4076, and Huskies’ Touchdown Club.  Please come out and enjoy a good meal and support our sponsors.

 

Oink & Squeal Party

The Burton American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 459 Oink and Squeal Party raffle and Chinese auction will be April 12th. Doors open at 5pm and raffle begins at 7pm. Raffle tickets are $2.00 each. 1st prize $250, 2nd prize $150 and 3rd prize $75, as well as 20 hams. Admission is nonperishable food and bath items or cash donations. Easter Egg Hunt

The 61st annual Newton Falls Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Girl Scouts will be held April 12th at 1 pm at the Community Center basketball courts. The event is for ages 2 through 10. There will be 8000 eggs placed, all with prizes. The Easter Bunny will be visiting with guests. Anyone wishing to donate of help in any way, please call Shara Sullivan 330-872-7333.

The Church of Christ, 9837 Wolf Rd, Windham, is having their monthly family activity day on April 12th from 3-5pm. We will be having an Easter Egg Hunt, games, prizes, a Veggie Tale video and will serve hot dogs and punch. Everyone is welcome!

 

Swiss Steak Dinner

The Nelson UMC will be hosting a Swiss steak dinner on April 12th at the Nelson Community House on Nelson Circle. Dinner is served from 4:30-7pm, at last year’s price of $9 for adults. The dinner consists of tender Swiss steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn casserole, coleslaw, rolls, dessert and beverage. Carry-out is also available.

 

Free Clothing Giveaway

Mantua Center Christian Church will be having a free clothing giveaway on April 12th from 9-1 at 4118 St. Rt. 82 in Mantua. Everything is clean and ready to wear; we accept donations of gently used or new clothing items.

NRA First Steps Shotgun Course

Appalachian Experience Bake Sale

April 13

During the Pancake Breakfast on Palm Sunday, April 13th, St. Joseph’s Appalachian Experience group will hold a bake sale to raise funds for their trip to Clintwood, VA in June to participate in their St. Joseph’s Housing Repair Program. All bakers may drop off their baked goods in the school hallway before Mass. Your support is greatly appreciated.

 

Portage County Gardeners – Speaker Series

Bill Johnson, an accomplished public speaker, naturalist, historian, filmmaker, re-enactor, wilderness skills instructor, and author will present an overview of native living in this area from prehistoric to historic times and then will focus on plants, planting, bio-engineering, native horticulture/agriculture and how all that effects us today. Full Moon Field Station Talk: It’s Not Easy Seeing Green (Wetland Plant ID)

Emliss Ricks, retired ODNR Natural Areas & Preserves manager for NE Ohio and current Hiram College Field Station Steward, will talk about wetland plant identification and how “knowing your greens” can help the environment. Home Cooked Supper

The next home-cooked supper at Pricetown Methodist Church, 4640 Pritchard-Ohltown Rd, Newton Falls, will feature meatloaf, mashed potatoes, vegetables, super salad, rolls, homemade desserts and beverage. This will be held from 5-6:30pm on April 16th.  Cost is $7 for Adults; $5 for kids 10 and younger. Carryouts will be available.

The retires of Local 2243 U.S.W.A Copperweld Steel Co. (S.O.A.R. Chapter 1-28-10) will have their regular monthly meeting on April 17th at 1pm at the Local 1375 Union Hall at 684 North Park Ave in Warren.

The Burton Easter Egg Hunt will be held April 19th at Burton Village Park at 11am. Ages 1-6 welcome  -rain or shine.

 

JAG Pancake Breakfast

April 19

James A. Garfield Student Council will be sponsoring an all you can eat Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, April 19 from 8am-noon at Garfield Elementary School.  Pancakes will be served with sausage, juice, milk or coffee and pure maple syrup donated by Mark Apple. Tickets will be sold at the door and are $6 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under.  All proceeds will be donated to #GarrettsvilleStrong.

 

Open House & Rummage Sale

The Nelson Township Easter Egg Hunt will be held April 19th at Pixley Park at 2pm. Ages 3-11 welcome, if rain should occur, the hunt will be moved to the Community House. The Easter Bunny will also be making an appearance, so bring your camera!

Indoor Yard Sale will be held on April 26th from 9am to 4pm at Christian Life Center’s new location; 1972 East Summit Road Kent at the corner of ST RT 261 and Summit Road. Vendors are needed. Rental spaces are available for $20.00 per space. Spaces size 8×8 feet. All vendors must provide own tables and chairs. Set-up times are Friday 6:00 – 8:00pm and Saturday 7am – 8:45am.  Something for everyone! Stuffed Pork Chop Dinner

On April 26th there will be a stuffed pork chop dinner at the Braceville UMC off of St. Rt. 82 in the center of Braceville. The dinner begins at 4pm and we will serve until 6:30, unless we run out. Dinner will include mashed potatoes, green beans, corn, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts, bread, coffee, tea or punch. The cost is $9.00 for adults and $3.50 for children. Takeouts are available.

 

Spring Rummage Sale

The Altar & Rosary Society of St. Ambrose Church, located at 10692 Freedom St. in Garrettsville, is hosting their annual Spring Rummage Sale and Bake Sale on April 25th from 9-5 and April 26th from 9-1. Saturday is bag day. The rummage sale will take place in the church hall.

 

Newton Falls Kiwanis Club’s Annual Steak Dinner 

 April 26

The Newton Falls Kiwanis Club will hold their annual Steak Cookout on April 26th from 4 to 7pm at the Newton Falls Community Center on Quarry Street.The meal includes a 14-ounce sirloin steak, on the grill, cooked as you wish, salad, potato, drink, and dessert, all for $15.00. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any NF Kiwanis member or by calling Bob at 330-872-3854. There will also be a 50/50 drawing. Kiwanis meets every Tuesday (except the last Tuesday of the month) at 6:30 pm at The Covered Bridge Inn Restaurant. We welcome new members.

 

Earth Day at Hiram: Roots of Resilience, Routes to Change

Celebrate the Earth and empower yourself to be sustainable. Three speakers will present on a diversity of topics, including climate change, conservation, home energy efficiency and grassroots activism, demonstrating the sometimes subtle and unseen links between environmental issues and everyday activities. Community members are encouraged to bring their children and participate in a variety of child-friendly activities, including face-painting, nature games and crafts. Knee Deep in Bluebells

April 27

One of the most unbelievable and spectacular sights in all of Ohio is the riot of wildflowers at the Poland Forest, near Youngstown. Here, in a setting among some of the largest trees in the state, thousands upon thousands of wild bluebells and other spring wildflowers bloom. The forest floor is literally awash with a carpet of bluebells, dabs of red and white trilliums and a haze of marsh marigolds; the artistry of nature in all it is glory. The hike begins at 4:00pm. Shalersville School Reunion Reservations

April 28

On May 3rd The Shalersville School Reunion will be held in the Shalersville Town Hall. A banquet dinner of stuffed chicken breast and beef tenderloin will be served at 5:30.  All former classmates and friends are welcome to attend; cost is $15.00 per person.  Prepaid reservations need to be made by April 28th to Judy Richardson at 8945 Cooley Rd., Ravenna, Oh 44266 or call 330-297-9681.  We will Honor the Classmates of 1944,1954,1964 and the oldest and youngest classmates present.  There will a few other surprises and the Shalersville Historical Museum will be open from 4:00 to 5:00 that afternoon.

 

Wildflower Lollapalooza & Wine Fest

Discover the amazing display of wildflowers along the trails of the Eagle Creek State Nature Preserve near Garrettsville. Following our exploration of the forest, we will retire to the nearby Candlelight Winery for a little sip of the grape. Meet at the Eagle Creek preserve 2 miles northeast of Garrettsville on Center St, and 1 mile south on Hopkins Rd. Hiking fee: $5 for members of Friends of the Field Station ($8 for non-members). Secret Garden: Moore, Draime Estate Gardens

This beautiful garden in Howland is operated by Kent State University and is closed to the public. A wide variety of plants are found in the well planned perennial garden, the formal English and Italian gardens, conifer collection, and walled vegetable and water gardens. The ground also contain a unique sculpture collection by Caroline Stacey and others. Directions will be provided upon registration. Newton Falls Plant Exchange- It’s Spring in the Falls!

May 10

Join us on May 10th from 9 AM until Noon at Newton Falls Park to meet with other gardeners and to trade plants.  Just bring at least 6 plants to trade (more are always welcome).  Fancy pots are not required; any old box or bag will do.  In addition to the plants, a band will provide live music so bring a lawn chair and relax. Football & Cheerleading Sign Ups

May 10 & 24

The Newton Falls Little Tigers will be holding signups for football and cheerleading on May 10th and 24th  at the Community center stone pavilion. The signups will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The signups are for children 6 yrs. old to 12 yrs. old as of July 31st. Please bring a copy of child’s birth certificate for the league. T-Ball

May 31- June 28

Ravenna Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring an instructional T-ball program for boys and girls ages 4 and 6; child must be at least 4 years old before May 31st. The fundamentals of basic baseball / softball are taught as children learn better throwing, catching and batting techniques using tennis balls and batting tees. Classes will be held on Saturdays May 31st to June 28th from 10-11:15am. at Havre Woods Park in Ravenna.  Registration fee for City Taxpayers (live or work in the Ravenna City) is $32.00 or Non-City Taxpayers is $40.00.

 

Hambden Grange Concerts

June 21 & July 19

The Huntsburg Grange has bandstand concerts set for June 21 with Boys Are Back, and July 19 with Fort Huntsburg Band.  Concerts start at 6 PM, rain or shine.  If it rains, concerts are held on the town hall stage.   Bring your lawn chair.  Refreshments will be available. Businesses or individuals interested in sponsoring a concert, please call 477-2822.

 

Chaney High School Reunion

July 18 & 19

The Chaney High School Class of 1974 40th Class Reunion scheduled for the third weekend of July.  Please save the date and spread the word. The celebration starts on July 18th and the CHS Class of 1974 Invites All Chaney 70’s Graduates to “Come As You Were, Friday Night Fever Party”  at Kuzmans  Lounge.  Cost $5.00 per person.
