Feline Spay and Neuter Clinic

In an effort to help with the growing cat problem in Portage County, Rose’s Rescue along with the Portage Co Dog Warden’s Office will be hosting an all cat spay and neuter clinic on Tuesday July 15, 2014. The cost per spay or neuter will be $20 per cat. An appointment is required.  The $20 must be prepaid to hold an appointment spot.  The $20 is nonrefundable if you do not show up for your scheduled appointment or cancel less than 48 hours prior to the event.

2014 Balloon-A-Fair Seeking Parade Entries 

Parade applications are available for the Ravenna Balloon A-Fair Grand Parade. Entries should focus on this year’s theme “Ravenna Pride In The Sky”.  Parade line up begins at 7:00 am and the parade step off at 9:00 AM September 20, in beautiful downtown Ravenna. All units must have a 2014 parade application on file.  The All American Judges will be judging the parade. The ‘Legacy’ of Larry Doby

Speaker Ike Brooks of the Baseball Heritage Museum in Cleveland will be at the Century House, across from Hiram Police Station off 700 south of 82/305, June 26th at 7:30pm.The topic will be the ‘Legacy’ of Larry Doby. This presentation will discuss the career highlights of the second African American to play Major League baseball and the first in the American League with the Cleveland Indians. This free event will be presented by the Hiram Historical Society and is open to the public.

Buckeye Martinfest

The Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association is holding a free, family oriented festival. The 5th Annual Buckeye MartinFest June 28th from 2-4pm at North Reservoir Boat Launch Ramp, State Mill Road, Coventry. Held in this area features feeding the Purple Martins, seeing their habitat, even possibly holding some of the babies in hand.  There will be many exhibits set up by various organizations specializing in nature and the environment including: Summit County MetroParks, the Ohio Division of Natural Resources, Ohio Natural Areas and Preserves Association, the Akron Library and, of course, the Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association. It’s an excellent fun and informative afternoon for the whole family, young and old alike. And did I mention, it’s free?

Amateur Radio Association Field Day

June 28-29

Warren Amateur Radio Association Field Day will be held this year at Mosquito Lake State Park off of Rt. 305 near the boat docks in the grassy area. It will begin June 28th  at 10 am with setup, then on the air by 2pm, and will go all night until 29th at 2 pm will be tear down time.  Please bring a covered dish for the picnic and a lawn chair.

 

The Friends of Melana 5k Run/1 Mile Walk

The Friends of Melana Foundation is organizing the 4th Annual Friends of Melana 5k run and 1 mile fun run/walk to be held on June 29th at Garrettsville Summerfest. All proceeds go towards research for children’s glioma brain cancer. Event registration can be done online at www.stopkidscancer.org. click on ‘Events.’ Registration will also take place the day of the event on the front lawn of St. Ambrose rectory on Freedom St. in Garrettsville. Community Center Open

The Community Center at Mantua Center will continue to be open thru the summer on Tuesdays in the old Mantua Center School Building, on Center Rd. just north of SR 82.  Free, everyone’s invited.   Children must have adult supervision, but we’ve got craft materials and lots of different games we’d be glad to teach you all to play, adults and children alike.  Hours are 9:30 am until late afternoon. (We close when everyone’s gone but the leadership.)  Bring food to share for potluck lunch at noon. Our current service project is making dresses for little girls in Africa.  Pattern is simple and children can participate.  We re-open at 5:00 for the Don’t Eat Alone supper potluck served at 5:30, to which we extend a special invitation to anyone who eats way too many meals by themself: widowed, divorced, never married, spouse travelling, it doesn’t matter.   Beverages and tableware provided.

Library Closed Independence Day

Vet’s Appreciation Day

Burton-Middlefield American Legion Post 459 Veteran’s Appreciation Day & Fireworks. Join us for our annual fireworks display on July 4th at the Geauga County Fairgrounds. Bible School

Annual Spelling Bee

The annual spelling bee, sponsored by Trumbull County Retired Teachers, will be held on July 10, at 1 p.m. at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds. Community Yard Sale

Mantua Farmer’s Market

Mark your calendar for the start of the Mantua Farmer’s Market season.  The Market is under new sponsorship this year, Christ Lutheran Church is in charge. All vendor fees will go into their Handicapped Entrance Project fund. Price is $5.00 per date. Our vendors sell a variety of items and more vendors are needed. The Markets will be held on Saturdays from 9 am – 1 pm beginning on July 12th and ending on September 27th. Financial Planning as You Age

Come join us for a free educational workshop where we will discuss the concerns of aging citizens and how to plan for the known and the unknown. It will feature speakers Tom Talcott and Josh Postlewaite speaking on topics such as protecting your assets from nursing facilities, avoiding probate, and important legal documents. Chaney High School Reunion

The Chaney High School Class of 1974 40th Class Reunion scheduled for the third weekend of July.  Please save the date and spread the word. Adventure Expeditions: The Grand Canyon of the East

Hambden Grange Concerts

The Huntsburg Grange has a bandstand concert set for July 19 with Fort Huntsburg Band.  Concerts start at 6 PM, rain or shine.  If it rains, concerts are held on the town hall stage.   Bring your lawn chair.  Refreshments will be available. Cheese Making Workshop

The Portage County Gardeners  will have a Cheese Making Workshop on July 19- 10a.m.-noon at 5154 Prospect St. Ravenna, OH 44266. Cost is $25.00. Learn how to make soft mozzarella and then ricotta cheese in a crock pot. You will get a starter kit to take home and you can sample the instructor’s cheese. Parkman Community Picnic

Residents of Parkman, come enjoy an evening of fun with your neighbors and friends July 19th from 5-8pm at Overlook Park, St. Rt. 168. The Chamber of Commerce is providing burgers & hot dogs, beverages, and paper products.  Please bring a dish to share!  They also are providing snow-cones, cotton candy, and popcorn for snacking. NUMC 200th Birthday

Library Now Accepting Donations for the Annual Summer Book Sale

 July 20-Aug 2

The Friends are now accepting donations for their annual summer book sale which will take place July 30 – August 2. Bring gently used or new children’s and adult books, collectibles, comic books, CDs, DVDs, audio books on CD, puzzles and games for adults and children, sheet music, coffee table books, and prints to the Geauga West Library during regular library hours.  No textbooks or encyclopedias, please.  A receipt for your donation is available. Funds raised from the book sale support adult and children’s programming at the Geauga West Library.  The Geauga West Library is located at 13455 Chillicothe Road in Chesterland, next to West Geauga High School.  The phone number is 440-729-4250.

 

Pricetown UMC Vacation Bible School

What’s Bugging Your Plants & Trees

On Wednesday, July 23 from  7:00 – 9:00 p.m. the  Master Gardeners  who answer your questions on Helpline are offering a free evening of diagnostic help in the middle of the growing season.  Bring your gardening problems, questions and even diseased or failure to thrive plant samples. Red Cross Blood Drive

Falls Home Remodeling will be hosting a Blood Drive for the Red Cross, Here at our showroom at 104 a East Broad St. Newton Falls, next to Circle- K, on July 31st from 2-6 pm. The Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society of women educators in Geauga County, is offering a grant-in-aid to a female student who is entering her senior year in college and is majoring in education. Safety Town

Safety Town for incoming Crestwood Primary School Kindergarten students will take place Aug 4-8, 2014 at Crestwood Primary School. The program will run from 9:00-11:30 a.m., and your child will have the opportunity to learn how to be safe at home, at school, and at play. Graduation will be on August 8, 2014 at 9:00am, so please plan to attend with your child. Register by July 1 and pay $25.00.
