Schwan’s Fundraiser

The Curtains up Theatre has begun their Schwan’s food fundraiser. Magic in the Woods: Dragons Breath & the Disappearing Creek

A trek in search of the unusual magical plant material that grows in the magnificent old growth forest of the Hiram College Field Station. An actual demonstration of the “magic” will take place at the fire circle next to the disappearing creek. Meet at the field station (5:00-7:00pm). Nelson’s Huge Garage Sale

May 23-26

Come one, come all to the annual 10,000 sq. ft. garage sale under the tents at 8488 St. Rt. 305 on Memorial Day weekend. There are hundreds of items to choose from. There will be a food concession stand on the premises. Come and browse, make some purchases to benefit yourself and help develop Pixley Park in the process. Open May 23-25 from 9-8 and May 26th from 9-3. We look forward to seeing you.

Silent Auction at ThornCreek Winery and Gardens in Aurora on May 24th from 2-4PM.  Portage Faith United Methodist Church is holding a silent auction at ThornCreek Winery and Gardens in Aurora. Rivers Casino Fundraiser 

May 24

Windham High School Softball Fundraiser to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, PA will be May 24th. Bus leaves from Windham High School at 2pm and will return by 11pm. $40 per ticket, $20 free game play, $5 food voucher, 50/50 and door prizes. Must have driver’s license to receive free game play. Observatory Open

May 24

Stephens Memorial Observatory of Hiram College will be open to the public on May 24th  from 9-11PM. Visitors will view planet Mars, the M13 star cluster in Hercules, and (possibly) Saturn as it puts in an appearance late. Cloudy skies cancel the event! The Observatory is located on Wakefield Road (Rt. 82) less than a quarter of a mile west of Route 700 in Hiram. For updates and more information, see the observatory’s Web site: StephensObservatory.org or “@StephensObs” on Twitter. No reservations are required and there is no admission fee for observatory public nights. Cloudy skies at the starting time cancel the event and, in that case, the observatory will not open. There is no parking at the Observatory. Visitors may park on permissible side streets near the Post Office, a short distance east of the observatory.

 

Community Center at Mantua Center

May 27

Come with a friend or make some new ones.  The cafeteria wing of the old Mantua Center School (Center Rd just north of SR82) is open from 9:00 to about 3:00 every Tuesday for socializing and a variety of activities.  We bring food to share for potluck lunch, served about noon.  Cards and various board games are available. The Community Center has begun re-opening at 5:00 for a potluck supper at 5:30.  Anyone is welcome to come, but if you are someone who eats way too many meals alone you are especially invited.  Men and women, single, widowed, or divorced, come share a meal at the Center.

 

Football & Cheerleading Sign Ups

The Newton Falls Little Tigers will be holding signups for football and cheerleading on May 24th  at the Community center stone pavilion. The signups will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The signups are for children 6 yrs. old to 12 yrs. old as of July 31st. Please bring a copy of child’s birth certificate for the league. James A. Garfield PTO Pick Your Price Rummage Sale

Saturday May 24th from 9am – 3pm the James A Garfield Intermediate School PTO invites you to come shop our annual rummage sale filled with great items donated by  local residents  — and more! Library Closed Memorial Day

All branches and offices of the Portage County District Library will be closed on May 26th in observance of Memorial Day. They will resume normal operating hours on May 27th.

 

Memorial Day Service

Atwood-Mauck Post 459 Burton-Middlefield Post will be hosting their Memorial Day Service at the Burton Village Gazebo on May 26th, followed by an open house at the Legion Home on Goodwin Street. Call Bo 440-834-8765 for details.

 

Veteran’s Memorial Dedication

May 26

A dedication of the newly constructed Veteran’s Memorial will be held “on the green” at Mantua Center at noon on May 26th. The short program will follow the regular Memorial Day observance at West Lawn Cemetery at 11am.

 

Nelson Township Memorial Day Service

May 26

Nelson Township will honor our Veterans with a Memorial Day Service on May 26 at 10AM. The service being held at Nelson Square will include the American Legion Honor Guard, presentation of the flag and tribute to the men and women that have served our country.

 

Geauga Consumer Connection

May 27

The 2014 Geauga Consumer Connection is May 27th from 4pm to 7:30 pm in the Sisters of Notre Dame Education Center Auditorium located at 13000 Auburn Road – north of SR-87.  It’s a free event for the whole family; there will be businesses to check out, owners to meet and talk to, food, food samples, entertainment, show specials, door prizes, Chinese raffle, free gift bags to the first 400 people! Silent Auction

Maple Grove School benefit Silent Auction May 30th at the Parkman Community House. Tickets available at Graham’s Country Store or Crosscut Country Store or by calling 330-5278-0979. Tickets are $10.00 and include 20 silent auction tickets. Doors open at 4:00, drawings begin at 6:30.

 

Drive-In

Just like the 50’s drive-in – with root beer floats and carhops! May 30th from 5-7pm the Youth and Outreach Committee of Portage Faith UMC will be having a Drive-In dinner in the parking lot of Portage Faith. The menu features hamburgers, cheeseburgers, tater tots and floats with your choice of Coke, Root beer or diet; bottled water will also be available. You can eat in your car or sit at the picnic tables (weather permitting)Join the fun! Proceeds go towards Youth projects.

 

Kid’s Family Game Party

The Windham Church of Christ, 9837 Wolf Road, Windham, is having their monthly party on May 31st from 3-5pm in the fellowship hall. Cake walk, musical chairs, and indoor and outdoor games are planned (weather permitting). Hot dogs and punch will be served.

 

Athletic Physicals

Dr. Steven Riley, Chiropractic Center of Garrettsville,  will be offering athletic physicals for the 2014-15 year. Cost is $10 and will take place on May 31st from 9am-1pm in the Middle School Gym. Community EMS Open House & Parade

Community EMS District cordially invites members of the community to our Open House and Parade on May 31st. The parade kicks off at JAG High School promptly at Noon, ending at our station on Forest Street. After arriving at our station, refreshments will be provided! We hope to see everyone May 31st!

 

Book Sale

Gorge Hike 

May 31

Join professional naturalist staff from the ODNR’s Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, as we traverse the hemlock lined sandstone gorge and waterfalls of Sheepskin Hollow State Nature Preserve in Columbiana County. The hike will begin at 1:00pm. Sheepskin Hollow is located at 50991 Pancake-Clarkson Rd Negley, OH  44441. No registration is required. For more information contact Adam Wohlever at (330)-527-5118. Special Instructions: This is a difficult hike and not recommended for small children or inexperienced hikers. Parking is along Pancake-Clarkson Rd. near the power line right of way.

 

2014 Freedom Dog Fest

June 1st, Aurora Parks & Recreation Department & Freedom Greyhound Rescue of Aurora invite you to attend the 2014 Freedom Dog Fest. All breeds welcome! Little Tigers 5th Annual Golf Outing

The Newton Falls Little Tigers will be holding their 5th annual golf outing at the Olde Dutch golf course in Lake Milton on June 7th. The 4-man scramble starts with an  8 a.m. shotgun with registration starting 7:00. The 4-man scramble costs $70.00 per person and will include coffee/ doughnuts, lunch provided by SUBWAY, steak dinner, and beverages. There will also be prizes on every hole and side games. Geauga County Master Gardener Volunteers Fairy Gardens

Blood Drive

Falls Home Remodeling will be sponsoring another Blood Drive Here at our office at 104 a- East Broad St. Newton Falls on June 9th from 2-6 pm. The additional Blood drive is used to replace the Blood drives that were formerly held at the Methodist Church. Please come out and donate blood to help others and save a life! Hambden Grange Concerts

The Huntsburg Grange has bandstand concerts set for June 21 with Boys Are Back, and July 19 with Fort Huntsburg Band.  Concerts start at 6 PM, rain or shine.  If it rains, concerts are held on the town hall stage.   Bring your lawn chair.  Refreshments will be available. The Friends of Melana 5k Run/1 Mile Walk

The Friends of Melana Foundation is organizing the 4th Annual Friends of Melana 5k run and 1 mile fun run/walk to be held on June 29th at Garrettsville Summerfest. All proceeds go towards research for children’s glioma brain cancer. Event registration can be done online at www.stopkidscancer.org. click on ‘Events.’ Registration will also take place the day of the event on the front lawn of St. Ambrose rectory on Freedom St. in Garrettsville. Annual Spelling Bee

The annual spelling bee, sponsored by Trumbull County Retired Teachers, will be held on July 10, at 1 p.m. at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds. Chaney High School Reunion

Adventure Expeditions: The Grand Canyon of the East

Explore a personal connection to nature through hiking, camping, and canoeing expeditions into remote back country and remarkably beautiful natural areas. Geauga West Friends of the Library Now Accepting Donations for the Annual Summer Book Sale

The spring book sale sponsored by the Geauga West Friends of the Library was a great success. Thanks to everyone for their support – for donations, for volunteers, and for everyone who came to purchase books and other items. The Friends are now accepting donations for their annual summer book sale which will take place July 30 – August 2. Bring gently used or new children’s and adult books, collectibles, comic books, CDs, DVDs, audio books on CD, puzzles and games for adults and children, sheet music, coffee table books, and prints to the Geauga West Library during regular library hours.  No textbooks or encyclopedias, please.  A receipt for your donation is available. Funds raised from the book sale support adult and children’s programming at the Geauga West Library.  The Geauga West Library is located at 13455 Chillicothe Road in Chesterland, next to West Geauga High School.  The phone number is 440-729-4250.
