Ravenna’ s Best Kept Secret? The Big Dog

2001

Ravenna – Recently, I was putting together a “Destination Ravenna” section for the paper and called on The Big Dog on West Highland Street.  Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised by what I found.  The Big Dog  (formerly Shep’s) opened in 2008 under the ownership of Patsy Haney.  Several initial renovations being made at that time, Patsy and her crew continued to make improvements.  In 2015, the entire inside was once again given an overhaul.  A new bar top was installed and a VIP seating area, which includes leather chairs, was added.

After their grand opening, adjacent property was purchased with plans to expand in the future. Soon the largest patio in Portage County was opened and each year a new feature has been  added, including a beautiful 360 degree waterfall, a stamped concrete area, a koi pond and entertainment stage.   In June 2016, a new outdoor bar was opened.  Named, “The Growler”, this new full service bar has televisions, signature cocktails, overhead garage doors that open to the patio and much more.

Since opening, Patsy and The Big Dog have helped raise over $150,000 for local families in need.  One event flew a US soldier home to be with his family, including his new baby, for Christmas.

Big Dog Honors include:

*“Favorite Place On Google” (An award given to less than 1% of businesses in the US.)

*Winner of the 2016 Hotlist for Best Wings in the Akron/Canton Area

*Winner of the 2016 Hotlist for Best Neighborhood Bar in the Akron/Canton Area.

The Big Dog also features cornhole, billiards, daily specials, DJ’s and live bands.  During Ohio State Football season, The Big Dog throws a Tailgate Party  which includes giveaways, raffles, a BBQ featuring burgers and sausage sandwiches, beer specials and more.

The Big Dog is open Tuesday – Friday 4 p.m. to 1 a.m.; Saturday noon – 1 a.m.; Sunday noon – 8 p.m.  They are closed on Mondays because they need the rest from all the fun!!
