Pumpkin latte, pumpkin pie, pumpkin beer, pumpkin pasta… the list of pumpkin items goes on and on. Recently I’ve had a couple of guests ask me for some wine recommendations to pair with their pumpkin dishes since the spices in some dishes can greatly alter the taste of the wine. So if you’re not tired of pumpkin yet keep reading to see what wines you should serve with your next dish.

I absolutely love risotto and was really excited to find a recipe for a pumpkin risotto! Usually I pair any risotto with a dry white wine and I was worried that something too dry may not accent the pumpkin flavors. So to combat the pumpkin I selected a nice Vidal Blanc (our Candlelight White wine). The clean, light flavors of the Vidal Blanc white wine helped to lift the almost floral aspects of the pumpkin without accentuating too much sweetness.

When incorporating cream into a pumpkin recipe, the food gets a little heavier, so a wine with a little more weight works well. My favorite wine is a good, heavy Sangiovese so I knew the heaviness of this wine would strike a balance between the wine and pumpkin cream sauce without overpowering the pumpkin. Since we are currently out of our Sangiovese I suggest either Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino or, for a little more spice, look to Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico.

Finally, last week I wrapped up my week of pumpkin tasting with a pumpkin gnocchi with a sage butter sauce. The sage through me off a little bit however the waiter recommended I pair this with my favorite white wine – Gewürztraminer! He was right! The pepperiness of the Gewürztraminer complimented the sage as well as the pumpkin spice in the gnocchi.

Of course no pumpkin tasting is complete without adding some pumpkin pie. While some people enjoy pumpkin pie with a sparkling wine or a dry Champagne I prefer to enjoy the pie with a Port. It’s a tasty bargain that will also last a week after opening.
