Mantua – Congratulations are in order at the Mantua-Shalersville Fire Department, as Christopher Mullins was recently sworn in as the Department’s Assistant Chief. Fire Chief Matt Roosa swore Mullins in at a recent Fire Board meeting while Mullins’ grandfather, Lyle Pittman, pinned on Mullins’ new badge in the special ceremony.

Assistant Chief Mullins has served the MSFD in a variety of roles since 2004, including Certified Paramedic, EMS coordinator, Fire Safety Inspector, and Fire Safety Educator. Mullins has also served as a Firefighter in the City of Aurora, and is a resident of Freedom.

During that same evening, two Mantua Township residents were recognized for their roles in helping a neighbor escape her home during a fire at her residence on the morning of June 5th. Fire Board member and Township Trustee John Festa and Township resident Suzanne Whitman were presented with a resolution for their actions on June 5th. After learning their elderly neighbor needed assistance, the two quickly propped a ladder against the side of the house, allowing her to escape unharmed from a second story window prior to the arrival of the Fire Department. “If it wasn’t for them,” Chief Roosa informed the Fire Board, “the outcome could have changed dramatically.” The two residents were applauded for coming to the aid of their neighbor.

Previously, it was incorrectly noted that a fatality was suffered at this incident. According to Chief Roosa, there hasn’t been a fatality at a residential fire in Mantua since the incident on Sheldon Road in December 2014.

The next Fire Board meeting will be held on Monday, August 8th at 6 pm at the Mantua-Shalersville Fire Station.
