It Was Surely Shirley

Garrettsville – On July 23, 2012, after a celebration of life (featuring colorful reminiscences by friend Mary Furillo) remembering long-time resident and active community member, Shirley Miller, an upbeat crowd gathered at the northeast corner of the James A. Garfield athletic field for a good-bye that she would have loved.

Shirley was a booster of all things Garfield–athletics, attendance, music, academics, proms, excellence & achievements of every stripe–and she got into the trenches to make them happen. Coaching, corralling kids, collecting funds, keeping an eye on study hall, supervising a busfull, she was there.

So this farewell was definitely her.

The JAG Marching Pride swung in from the opening day of their band camp, formed up behind the goalposts and played the Garfield Fight Song, G-Man kicker, Zach Hoffmann, booted one through the uprights, husband, Tom and son, Scott Miller rang the Garfield Victory Bell, the Pride played the Garfield Alma Mater and a bouquet of black and gold balloons was released to ascend into the sky and drift away to the northern blue.

Surely, it was Shirley.
