Harvest Moon Pig Roast a Success

Nelson Twp. – Pixley Park Development Committee held their Annual Harvest Moon Pig Roast Pot Luck Dinner at the community house last Saturday. The dinner was a fundraising event for the development of Pixley Park in Nelson Township. The idea behind the dinner was to bring the community together to get to know their neighbors while raising funds to continue the development Pixley Park. The dinner was a free to those who brought a dish to pass those who chose not to cook paid $5 to join in the fun.
Preparations started early Saturday in fact, long before most of us were out of bed Saturday Matt Ryser was at the community house dodging rain drops while preparing the suckling pig for roasting. After 8 hours of manning the spit, the pig was ready to be served to the hungry community. The event had about 100 folks anxiously waiting for dinner as they bought raffle tickets, and Chinese auction tickets while listening to the easy sounds of the Garrettones.
Soon dinner was served; there was just about every type of dish imaginable to go with the roasted pork, from cheesy potatoes to coleslaw and even some scrumptious desserts. Before too long, folks had quickly devoured the fruit of Matt’s labor and had a time of fellowship before the committee began drawing winners to the Chinese auction and 50/ 50 raffle.  The afternoon of fun raised about $1000 for the park.
The Park Development Committee was formed to help meet the goal of seeing a safe place in the community for folks to gather and kids to play. Since the committee’s inception they have made a lot of progress turning the dream into a reality. In 2009 the hiking trail at the park opened and was dedicated.  In 2010 the park committee was able to build a ball diamond, along with dug outs. This year they have added bleachers and put in a small playground that was donated by a township resident. The future plans for the park are pavilion, a large playground, picnic tables, horseshoe pits, BBQ grills, and possibly a soccer field. The committee is committed to seeing Mr. Pixley’s dream of a park to become a reality and they are well on there way.
The park committee holds two fundraisers a year one being the Harvest Moon Pig Roast and Potluck Dinner and the other is their annual garage sale held over the Memorial Day weekend. If you missed the dinner you can still help out the park causes by donating useful items to their garage sale, attending their sale in May or by donating monetary gifts to the park.
