Halloween Candy and Wine Pairs

Last year I didn’t get a chance to write about the Halloween Candy and Wine pairing so this year a few faithful readers reminded me that I needed to get tasting! So, armed with a few bags of candy and a few bottles of wine I set out to come up with the best Halloween candy and wine pairing this year.

In past years we have paired dark chocolate Hershey Kisses with a dry red wine but this year I was on a mission to find a new option. I selected one of our latest releases at the winery – a Cabernet Franc and started to pair it with some unusual candies (Nerds, Swedish Fish, Tootsie Rolls) but wasn’t impressed with how it manipulated the taste of the wine. Just when I was about to cheat and select M&Ms to pair with our Cab Franc, I selected a Twix bar. I was actually surprised that the caramel from the Twix mellowed out the oak flavors of the wine.

I debated about what to try with the next candy – Skittles. I knew anything sweet would not pair well with the Skittles so I started with a Riesling. The fruity flavors of the Skittles still overpowered the wine so I paired them with our unoaked Chardonnay. Between the crisp flavor of the Chardonnay and the fruity Skittles candy, I think I found a great  match!

The next candy was a fun one to pair – Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. This is my favorite candy of all time! How could you pass up the texture combination of smooth chocolate and creamy peanut butter? In past years I have loved to pair our Riesling with a nutty flavor. So I instantly put these two together and was excited to find a winner!

As my tasting started to wind down I tried the final candy and my husband’s favorite – candy corn. I am not a fan of candy corn nor am I a fan of sweet wines; however the combination of the candy corn and our Afterglow (a sweet red) was a surprising combination. The pairing of the two toned down the sweetness in both the candy and the wine.

Disappointed that I did not find anything to pair with our fruit wines (Cranberry and Raspberry) I decided to experiment with some other options. After trying a few combinations of candy and our Raspberry wine, I came up with a great Halloween treat. I had to include dark chocolate somewhere in my pairing so my new favorite pairing is dark chocolate M&Ms with a glass of Raspberry wine. Happy Halloween everyone!
