Garrettsville – Hiram Rotary Report

4406

Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary Club met on February 22, 2016 at Cal’s II, Sky Plaza, Garrettsville, spending the time covering a myriad of topics, to wit:

Winners of the Fit-n-Fun competition have finally received their prizes, as Superintendent Ted Lysiak took them to choose their very own bicycles; there are pictures.

The roadside clean-up event is searching for a date.  High school activities and the ODOT schedules have to mesh.

The 4-Way Speech contestants will be presenting their efforts to the local club on March 14.  Winner will go on to the district competition in Aurora.

An application process for the awarding of the annual Rotary/InterAct scholarship(s) is being developed.  This year’s award will likely be following previous practice.

April looks like the month to schedule an InterAct/district exchange students/Rotary event at Sky Lanes Bowling as a final get-together activity for the exchange students among us.  Local exchange student, “Art” will be attending a major trip for all such students in March.

President Tom Collins spoke briefly about some Sierra Club interest in vertical farming in northeast Ohio as a future for decommissioned, re-purposed factories in the area.  They might also be able to use some of the CO2 emissions, which are good for plants, but not-so-good for humans and the environment.  He also produced a hand-out from AllProDad which drew a comparison with the Rotary 4-Way Test.

“Happy Dollars” were contributed recognizing two granddaughters participating in the Cleveland Youth Orchestra(—a solo, even), a successful Superheroes party for 5-yr-olds, time off, family time, a tapping for NHS (National Honor Society, recognizing character, scholarship, leadership and service), the many successful activities at Garfield High School, including sports and a letter from the French consulate replying to letters from Renee Chlysta’s classes, the successful end to an academic endeavor,  good condition of a church, amazing weather, simply for existence.

It was a good day.
