Excellent Turn-Out For A Night At The Races

811

Garrettsville – The 4th annual Night at the Races broke for the finish line with an excellent turn-out of ponies and players on Saturday, March 31, hosted by Sugar Bush Golf Club, with catering by Cal’s Restaurant. The sponsors included Slim & Jumbo’s, JAG All Sports Boosters, Portage Community Bank. Garfield Youth Football, JAG Fifth Grade Teachers, Skylane Bowling, Burrows Drilling, Charles Auto Family, Penney’s Auto Body and Fire 4 Hire. Programs for the evening were provided by The Villager (Villager Printing & Villager Emporium).

The Chinese auction offered a profusion of desirable goods, including Cavaliers merchandise, sports passes, some stuffed critters, gift certificates, beauty products, a bat bag, maple products., a casino pak, coolers, handcrafted wood items—including a bench made from an old G-Man stadium board seat. The dessert table was also enticing.
It was good to see new faces among the regular attenders; a rising crop of Boosters is always a sign of continued support for the athletic programs and the kids involved in them.

Each race had its own sponsor and horses with names submitted by the owners. The names were creative, to say the least, sometimes bordering on the scatological, but all in fun—no broken funny bones here. The personnel handling the sales and pay-outs were a little dodgy-looking.

Look for the fifth annual next year. Come and bring all of your Garfield-supporter friends.
