Crestwood School Board News for March

1092

Mantua – At this month’s board meeting, Director of Pupil Services, Michael Maglionico made a presentation on behalf of the District Leadership Team (DLT). Mr. Maglionico’s presentation introduced the team, which is charged with analyzing the district’s data, including student achievement and graduation rates, then accessing the most critical needs of the district. This team will then develop plans based on those needs, which will be implemented throughout the district. The DLT team is comprised of district administrators, teachers, curriculum liaisons, members of the community, representatives from the school board, and Superintendent David Toth. They will meet quarterly.

In other news, the school board discussed the feasibility of taping future board meetings in order to provide community members unable to attend meetings with access to the information discussed. After lengthy discussions, it was determined that April’s board meeting would be recorded using existing equipment, to test the quality level of the recording, and to determine what improvements might be necessary before spending any funds.

In her Sports Report, Mrs. Debbie Soltisz congratulated the CMS Wrestling team for being named PTC tournament champs.  She also reported that at the high school, both Varsity and JV Cheerleading squads won the PTC competition.  In Bowling, Matt Lyons finished as second highest individual, rolling a 278 game. The boys team missed qualifying for the State Competition by just 85 pins, but Matt Lyons competed, finishing tied for 55th in the State. Mrs. Soltisz also shared that all four Crestwood Wrestlers who qualified for the State Competition placed at that event, with Nick Wrobel & Jake Zemaitis placing 7th, Conner Nemec finishing in 6th, and Kenny Jackson earning 2nd place. Mrs. Soltisz congratulated all of Crestwood’s winning winter athletes, and noted that the spring sports of baseball, softball, track and tennis teams have already begun practicing.

In his Academic Report, Mr. Todd Monroe shared that Crestwood High School recently hosted the Regional Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition for District 6. The Exhibition included 800 of our region’s best works. At this event, 20 pieces by Crestwood student artists were chosen to move on to statewide judging. At the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition in Columbus, three of Crestwood students’ works were selected from over 12,000 works from across the state.  Amanda Fosnight, Bella Wagner, and Liz LaMarca’s pieces were selected as three of the top 300 in the state, and will be hung in the Governor’s offices in Columbus. In addition, Crestwood’s region was the 2nd Top Region in Ohio, ranking below the Columbus area.

Later, Mr. David Becker reported that Crestwood Schools will host a Jazz Festival all day on March 21 at Crestwood Middle School. This festival will feature the CMS and CHS jazz bands, and jazz ensembles from several other districts. He noted that CMS 7th and 8th grade band students are preparing for the Solo and Ensemble Festival, which takes place on April 12th. Both the 7th and 8th grade ensembles have begun rehearsing during class, and soloists will begin rehearsing with piano accompanists later this month in preparation for the All District Concert on April 15. Lastly, the Crestwood Band recently participated in OMEA Large Group Adjudicated Events, where the concert band earned a rating of good for their performance. The wind ensemble earned the highest rating that was awarded all evening — a rating of superior for their performance, earning a superior from each of the four judges. By winning this honor, they have earned the opportunity to perform at the OMEA State Event in April. This is the 8th year in a row that the wind ensemble has earned this opportunity.

The next Crestwood School Board meeting will be held at 7 pm on April 7th in the Crestwood High School library.
