Mantua – At their last regular meeting, the School Board voted unanimously to initiate a program called Surround Care, a before and after school program for district students. The program will run from 6:30 am until 6 pm during the school year, which begins on August 18th. Registration is open to all children enrolled in the Crestwood District from Preschool through grade five. District parent and resident Kim Ule will coordinate the program, which will take place at the Crestwood Primary and Intermediate Schools. While the district operates this program, it is funded entirely by parent fees, which vary, based upon the hours of services that are utilized. A registration fee of $25 per child is requested upon enrollment. For more information, visit crestwoodschools.org please contact Principal Cindy Ducca at (330) 357-8202 ext. 4000.

In addition, the district also approved implementation of a summer reading program to be held at the Primary and Intermediate Schools from July 27th through August 7th. Now in its third year, the program enlists the services of a team of Crestwood teachers who will use the three-week program to strengthen the reading and comprehension skills of a select group of roughly 140 students. This program aims to provide specialized instruction in an effort to combat ‘summer slide’, or the negative affects that result when students’ minds remaining inactive for three months, according to the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) organization.

Primary School Principal Cindy Ducca expressed her thanks to the group of volunteers, the ‘Dirt Devils,’ who donated their time and labor to weed, mulch and generally clean up the flowerbeds around the Primary and Intermediate campus. “I’m truly blessed to be a part of all of the wonderful people who always do what is best for our kids!” Ms. Ducca gushed. Superintendent Toth echoed her sentiments, thanking Yarnell for the donation of 20 yards of mulch and Davis Landscaping and countless parents and grandparents who volunteered their expertise and assistance on the project.

In addition, Superintendent Toth congratulated the District on being recognized by US News and World Report magazine as a Silver Medallion ‘Best High School”, ranking in the top 10% of Ohio Schools. Of the many Ohio schools considered this year, 19 were awarded gold medals, 138 earned silver like Crestwood, and 260 received bronze medals. An additional 464 high schools did not qualify for recognition by the prestigious institution. Find out more at usnews.com/education/best-high-schools.

Lastly, teachers Patty Timbrook and Tammy Anfang were honored as May and June employees of the month, as were custodian Donna Magalski (May) and cook Angela Hunter (June).

The next regular meeting of the Crestwood School Board will be held in the High School Library on Tuesday, June 30th at 7pm. Please note the date change due to the July 4th holiday.
