Mantua – Narrowing down the playing field in just a few short months from forty-seven applicants to just one, the Crestwood School Board has hired David Toth, (currently the principal at West Geauga High School), as Crestwood’s new School Superintendent. Retiring Superintendent Joe Iacano stated, “I wish David the best. He is coming to an excellent district that already has a quality program in place and I am sure he will bring additional ideas to the district that will enhance the education and services that we provide to kids and families.” Toth will replace Iacano, who will retire at the end of the current school year. 

In other news, Crestwood High School is pleased to recognize the forty-four winners of the 2012-2013 Winter Scholar Athlete Awards. In Boys Swimming, Austin Harris, Mike Fletcher, Sam Oliphant, and Danny O’Sickey were honored. The female swimmers honored were Olivia Cobb, Rebeca Rosa, Morgan Engelhart, McKenzie Faust, Amanda Fosnight, Hannah Bennett, Heather Pahoresky, Rosalie Novotny, Brittany Caldwell, Isabella Wagner, and Courtney Capel.

Award-winners in Cheerleading were: Tori Jeffries, Carrigan Benoit, Samantha Canepa, Kathleen Murray, Savannah Burkett, and Alannah Swan. Dance Team winners included Sarah Bridgman, Nicole Derthick, and Sierra Hobbs. Zak Goldinger won for Boys Bowling, while Courtney Berish, Julie Forster, and Leannah Frances won for Girls Bowling.

In Girls Basketball, Holly Hoffman, Mallory Lorence, Sally Hoffman, Tia Nuti, Allison Vannoy, Allyson Groves, Emily Youngblood, Amy Auble, and Morgan Strenk were recognized. Members of the Boys team honored included Jacob Klock-Horner, Jacob Graves, Matt Czerny, and Anthony Stuber. Lastly, Dylan Kager, Kenn Jackson, and Jacob Ondash were named Scholar Athletes for Wrestling.

In spring sports, the boys track team finished sixth at the recent Don Faix Invitational, while the girls team finished in second place. For the boys, Matt Monroe won at both shot put and disc. For the ladies, Tori Chiller won in the 400 meter, Marissa Midley won in the 300 hurdles, and Abby Soltisz won in the 3200-meter race. The 4 x 400 relay team of Taylor Rector, Marissa Midgley, Hayley Zigman, and Tori Chiller won as well.

In March, Crestwood High School officially became the Regional Site for Region 6 of the Ohio Governor’s Youth Art Exhibition when Art instructor Jennifer Scott took over the position as Regional Director. Over 800 pieces from various schools in the region competed for the 239 slots that would allow them to continue on to the state judging. Of the 239 that were selected to continue, the judges selected 32 of Crestwood’s works to continue on to compete at the state level.

The next School Board meeting will be held on May 6th at 7 p.m. at the High School, immediately following the Crestwood School District employee retirement reception, which starts at 6 p.m. and is open to the public.
