2017 marks the 150th anniversary of General John A. Logan’s proclamation on General Order No. 11 declaring the 30th day of May as a day “…designated for the purpose of strewing flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country…” establishing “Decoration Day”, or Memorial Day as we now know it, as a national day of remembrance.

To commemorate this milestone, Hiram Village and Hiram Township are pleased to announce the 2017 Memorial Day celebration on Monday may 29th will feature the Hon. Congressman David Joyce as keynote speaker. The celebration includes the annual parade lead by the Crestwood Scarlet Guard which will step off at Noon in front of the Hiram Post Office located on Hayden Street. The procession will make its way to Fairview Cemetery where the ceremony will include Hiram College Prof. Emerita Dr. Damaris Peters Pike singing the National Anthem, the Invocation and Benediction delivered by Rev. Dr. H. Dixon Slingerland, and the reading of the Roll Call of Veterans. A reception and Covenant Ceremony will follow at t Hiram College Koritansky Hall (Garfield Institute) located at the corner of St. Rt. 700 and St. Rt. 305 in Hiram Village.
