Candlelight Winery Goes to the Dogs

Nelson Twp. – Often when we think of wineries we think of a nice glass of wine, a plate of cheese and crackers, and some relaxing music; we usually do not add dogs to the mix, however, this past Saturday was Pug Day at the winery which brought out pugs and all sorts of other breeds as well. Pugs were the featured dog, but all friendly dogs were welcome to attend the party.  There were pugs of all sizes and ages, from fawn -colored to the richest black, all eager to be petted and played with and spend the day with their newly acquired doggie friends. Nelson resident, Susan Guy had her Great Danes there too, who were just aching for anyone to pay attention to them as well, which many folks obliged, self included.

Pug Day at the winery became a yearly tradition in 2005, after winery owner, Amanda Conkol’s first Pug, Mynde, passed away suddenly from a stroke.  In honor of her pet Mynde, they hold Pug Day and raise funds for the Ohio Pug Rescue.  Along with the Pug Day they also hold a cornhole tournament with 50% of the proceeds being donated to Ohio Pug Rescue and 50 % going to the tournament winner.
The winery’s lawn was a sea of dogs and their owners as they were all set to enjoy their day at the winery. The dog treats were flowing, good wine aw well, as folks gathered on the lawn with their pugs and other dogs to kick back and listen to the soothing sounds of Steve Vanderink and enjoy a day with their beloved pets.
The event had food trucks and other vendors on-site, along with Ohio Pug Rescue. The Ohio Pug Rescue had some of their pugs that were available for adoption. They also had information about their organization and what all they do to rescue pugs and find good homes for them.  They are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit all-volunteer organization operating a surrender, foster care, and placement program for all needy Pugs in Ohio. It doesn’t  matter their age, condition, or health, they take in as  many as funds and space allow. Many of the animals they take in are wonderful dogs, who have run into circumstances beyond their control and now find themselves in need of a new home with people who are willing to make a commitment to them for the rest of their lives. The winery featured their Pink Pug Wine which is a blend of sweet grapes, that carries the paw approval stamp from their resident pug, Mork.  They also had a pink pug souvenir wine glass for sale. The proceeds from the event went to the Ohio Pug rescue.
The winery is located in Nelson Township and is owned by Chris and Amanda Conkol. More information on the winery and its events can be found at www.candlelightwinery.com
