Can You Hear What I Hear?

‘Tis the season to…bliss-out on MUSIC?

Well, heck yes.  Here’s your chance to hear good tunes, to assist in making a contribution  to  the  community, to learn something about one of the great icons in American music, to plunge into the Advent season and to be buoyed by sounds of Christmas as you’ve heard them for years and as new as each morning.

To wit :

Sunday, December 7 — Damaris Peters-Pike will be offering a selection from her series, “Women of Note” in the person of Mary EllinBarrett, eldest daughter of Irving Berlin, whose thousand-plus published songs still shape American music today.  This program,” Irving Berlin—A Daughter Remembers,” will be presented at 4:00 p.m. in the Iva Walker Auditorium at James A. Garfield High School.  It is a benefit for the #Garrettsville Strong fund.  It is being sponsored by Dave Auble, Ohio Health Benefits, LLC, Gionino’s Pizzeria/Hiram, Total Lifetime Care Medical Affiliates, Dan LeScoezec, ChFC, Hickory Asset Management and Kepich Ford/Garrettsville.  Tickets are $10 each and there will be Christmas cookies and donuts from Bill and Staci Poole of Maggie’s Donuts/Hiram as well as punch from AVI, Hiram College Food Service available following the program.  Audience will be encouraged to join in singing Berlin’s “God Bless America” and who can resist humming along with “White Christmas”?  Make plans today.

And while you’re planning, plan to attend the annual Christmas concert/musical extravaganza—adult choir, O.K. Corale (That’s the kids, they’re cuter.  Sorry David.), bell choir, the whole Christmas ball-o-wax, directed by Jean Marvin—at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 10692 Freedom St. in Garrettsville at 6:00p.m.  Nice segue from Broadway to Main St.  This is always an event not to be missed; it’s just family, fun and faith from top to bottom.  Your ears will thank you and your heart will too.

Sunday, December 14 — The James A. Garfield Schools will present their take on Christmas music—instrumental, vocal, standards jazz, high school, middle school—to the public, starting at 2:00 in the Iva Walker Auditorium.  You haven’t heard “Jingle Bells” until you’ve heard it with tubas!

Then, lest you should feel a letdown in Christmas spirit, the chancel choir of the Garrettsville United Methodist Church, under the direction of Max Jackson, will present a program of lessons and carols on that Sunday evening, incorporating congregational singing into the season’s message in music as lifted up by the choir, the soloists, the newly-refreshed organ and the good feelings of all in attendance.  The hour is 7:00p.m.   The location is 8223 Park Ave.  The occasion is joyous.  The invitation is to you.
