A (Christmas) Tree Still Grows in Newton Falls

Newton Falls – One way to work off that extra slice (or two…) of Thanksgiving pie is to run through the mall hunting down Black Friday sales. But for a quieter, less-competitive, and wallet-friendlier option, Four Corners Park in Newton Falls provided just the right opportunity on Saturday afternoon.

Volunteers gathered in the small park to make a beautiful tree even more beautiful with a bit of sparkle, a bit of twinkle, and lots of holiday love as a large blue spruce, bare save for the fresh flakes of the first substantial snowfall of the season, soon became covered with all manner of lights, shiny ornaments, and glistening candy canes.

In past years, the tree has been generously donated by a local tree farm, decorated, and then disposed of after the new year and all of the Christmas cheer is done. However, the Newton Falls Area Commerce Association has long discussed the alternative of purchasing a tree and actually planting it in its usual spot so that it may be utilized for years to come. This year that idea came to fruition, and the new tree that was decorated over the weekend will not be taken down after Christmas, but rather will be a permanent fixture whose gorgeous greenery can be enjoyed throughout the year and for many years to come. Though the holiday trimmings will be packed away from season to season, as the blue spruce matures it should develop a silvery cast to its needles, which will give it a subtle shine year round even without the extra strings of lights.

The tree will be officially lit on Saturday, December 1st, following the short holiday parade through town leading to the park. Anyone wishing to participate in the parade or sing in the caroling procession should meet at the Andretti parking lot near McDonald’s by 5:15pm. Step-off is planned for 5:30pm. Rumor has it a familiar red-suited fellow will be making an appearance atop a fire truck, so all the good little elves won’t want to miss it!
