The Portage County District Library announces a generous donation from the Friends of the Garrettsville Library. This monetary donation has been made to support the assembly of senior memory kits made by the Outreach Services department. “With the series of fundraisers that have been so well supported, the Friends of the Garrettsville Library is able to support a variety of important and interesting projects throughout the community”, says Betsy Siman, President of the Friends of the Garrettsville Library.
The senior memory kits assist with recollection, sensory abilities, and perception. Included in the memory kits are books, DVDs, objects related to the theme, and additional material gathered from other sources. Current senior memory kits have themes such as laughter being the best medicine, remembering World War II, kitchen memories, and woodworking. “We are very fortunate to have received this donation from the Friends of the Garrettsville Library, as it will allow us to create additional senior memory kits”, says Sue Ann Schiely, Public Relations & Outreach Services Manager. “There are several themes planned for the upcoming year, and this donation will make a significant contribution towards our goal of completing these valuable kits.”
In addition, the senior memory kits have become very popular with area nursing homes, as dementia-related issues have grown more prevalent with nursing home residents. More and more, the kits are being incorporated into nursing home activities. “They are a great tool for reminiscing, useful for picking up smells, memory, and touch,” says Lisa Moore, Activities Director at the Gables of Kent Ridge. In recalling the recent use of a fair kit, Moore mentioned that many residents- residents who grew up on farms- picked up on memories from simply touching a blue ribbon.
