Garrettsville-Hiram Rotary met on November 18, 2013 to gain a final accounting of the success of the November Reverse Raffle and to air their thoughts on additions and corrections for next year…the tradition continues! Thank you’s will be going out to all donors and contributors.
The club also agreed to sponsor the Power of the Pen competition at the James A. Garfield Middle School coming up in the spring of 2014. Language Arts instructor Jackie Lovelace, who coaches the Garfield team and organizes the regional event, made the request and thanked the group for their previous generous support.
Planning for the Christmas party is beginning to snowball.
Family Week (January 25-February 1)particulars are beginning to fall into place. Local performers who would like to participate in the Family Music program are urged to contact any Rotary Club member to secure a spot in the all-star line-up.
Any local residents who would like to arrange for a gift delivery by Santa Claus should make their way to The Business Works or to McCumbers-Brady Realty, both on Main St., Garrettsville, with the gift(s) and the directions to the desired location. There is no charge for this tradition but any donations will go the support the People Tree program to assist those in need.
The meeting concluded with a brief program on the Quiz Bowl/QuizMaster/Academic Challenge agenda—in general and at James a Garfield High School. It is an academically-focused activity operated through the Portage County Educational Services Center and participated in by several of the schools in the county, as well as Lake Christian in Hartville. It features competition between four-person teams in two usual formats, NAQT or OAC (National Academic Qualifying Tournaments, Ohio Academic Challenge) answering questions covering a variety of topics such as American History, Geography, World Literature, American Literature, Fine Arts and Science.
Club members got to try their hands at some typical questions and some brain-teaser-type practice exercises. They’re keeping their day jobs.
