Portage County – The Portage Park District currently has two openings on its governing Board of Commissioners with a third opening anticipated in 2014. Park District Board members are appointed by Portage County Probate Court Judge Thomas J. Carnes, who is currently seeking applications from interested individuals. The Board meets regularly once a month, with additional meetings scheduled as needed.
The Park District is a government agency whose goals are conservation, education, recreation and community partnerships. The Park District manages 1,300 acres with 4 open parks and 14 miles of hike and bike trails across Portage County. The District has tremendous potential, including planning for trail connections and opening the 800 acres of parkland it currently owns, but can’t afford to open to the public yet. Board members are non-partisan and are appointed for a 3-year renewable term, to serve without pay.
